Sony doesn’t need E3. The Horizon SoP has 4 million views already, for one game.
Let's not act like Microsoft ain't gonna march out there and dedicate another 15-20 minutes of whatever they do to showing off yet another Forza game like they do damn near every year. The fact that we lose Bethesda's conference and it gets condensed into Microsoft's might be even worse because that's just less time for each of them.
If we're lucky Nintendo shows Breath of the Wild 2 but you can only usually count on them for a game or 2 to actually get excited about.
The third parties like Ubisoft always put together the same trash conferences year after year.
Also the COVID delays are more than likely in full effect. Let's not act like most E3s Sony didn't bring the heat and almost consistently have good press events debuting great games.

E3 should be a time to show games for people to get excited about not iterative games shown year after year. If they don't have 40 to 90 minutes of games that aren't the same games shown year after year like Forza, Assassin's Creed, and Call of Duty then fine don't have an E3 press event and unveil games with Game Awards trailers or or your own mini events. This is literally what I expect from Sony fans who are still gonna watch E3 even tho Sony isn't there. Games like BOTW2 and Metroid Prime 4 aren't the only games that will make a "splash" at these events just because they're AAA
And no matter what MS shows (when all they do is show games one after the other) a spin will be made.
and if im not mistaken didn't sony have a year of games that transitioned right into their next year's E3 lineup? Sony was a loss, sure, but they didn't lose that much, companies are just figuring they can save more by doing their own thing. Nintendo does their showcase, and then does a treehouse and other events to get their fanbase together to demo their games.
Nintendo is amazing because they were the 1st to drop out of E3 yet consistently had a E3 showing and even sections at E3.
Even with everything going on Nintendo is going to have a presence at this years E3.
Sony completely dropped E3 singe a couple years ago. They shown no signs of ever coming back. More power to them for finally figuring out they don't need to continuously put together 90 minute press events annually for the sake of propping up the relic from the video game magazines past that E3 is. Much of these press events are padded with stuff that doesn't really need to be there just to fill time. More than half of them end up displaying the same games we've come to expect year after year.

I think this is why i miss when E3 was private, ever since it became public everyone feels like they are 'important" or knows whats best for the event. For years now E3 has been searching for some sort of new identity and struggling to come to terms with the fact that it flat out isn't needed anymore. Companies can reach their audiences directly over the internet whenever they have something to say.
This year I can understand, but in the long run E3 and no the goty awards >>>> are the only two major US gaming events really needed.Just doesn’t make sense logistically anymore. There isn’t even a show floor this year, its completely digital. Why pay someone to be part of their show and have to put together their own digital showcase anyway unless you think you’ll get more attention for your games by proxy of everyone being more in tune to gaming events over teh weekend?
Sony hype is bigger than E3 hype which is why they aren’t participating. Not so much for the other companies
It's funny because I remember when the consoles were unveiled and talked about indepth it was at their own dedicated events rather than E3. Even last generation's consoles had their own events. High profile games like Final Fantasy XV last generation had their own dedicated events.Dude from what perspective are you even speaking from? If companies are showing up, they're showing up to show off IPs people are looking forward to, and show off new stuff/news to hype people and then show it off later on through out the year or whenever. I don't remember which company it was but they said they honestly have nothing to show at the time of E3 so they didn't bother to show up but told their fans to look out for future updates on what they're working on (Konami?)
These companies know that this time even for what it's worth will attend this event because a majority of people will tune in quite possibly the many people who only choose this time to tune into video game news all across the board collected in one showcase that will reach out to them.
And I don't see how views on a youtube vid can be the be all hype measure for any company when Animal Crossing NH had 4 mill views yet sold 30 million copies. It's obvious that hype was spread out way further than just streaming platforms.
E3 is a spectacle. It's a giant commercial. Pre-COVID it was headed even more so to be that.I think this is why i miss when E3 was private, ever since it became public everyone feels like they are 'important" or knows whats best for the event. ( Not saying this is you)
E3 is more than just showing off games, that was just the spectacle of it. One part... there is a lot of behind the scenes talking meeting up idea's exchanged and were people meet and greet and express things directly to publishers and directors. I've heard so many storys of "The reason why I work, or a game got made" is because of a random 1st meeting or convo at a E3.
Of course with covid things had to change up a bit.
But over all E3 is more than just something for consumers a lot of things happen behind the scene. Just like comic cons

I don't see the problem with that. It still was a spot that a lot of creative minds got to interact face to face with the fans and behind the scenes. A place to judge crowd and fan reactions.E3 is a spectacle. It's a giant commercial. Pre-COVID it was headed even more so to be that.
