Heightened concern about the Ebola virus has led to alarms being raised at three hospitals in New York City. But so far, no Ebola cases have turned up.

The latest episode involved a man who had recently been to West Africa, and who went to the emergency room at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan late Sunday with a high fever and gastrointestinal problems, the hospital reported on Monday. He is being kept in isolation at the hospital while tests are being done for Ebola, a deadly disease, but also for other illnesses that could have caused his symptoms.

But the city’s health department issued a statement on Monday saying that after consulting with Mount Sinai and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, “the health department has concluded that the patient is unlikely to have Ebola. Specimens are being tested for common causes of illness and to definitively exclude Ebola. Testing results will be made available by C.D.C. as soon as they are available.”

Dude probably went to Taco Bell and binged on a hella-crazy dinner: a couple tacos, burritos, a Gordita, a Chalupa, and a Quesarito after coming back from Africa. Food over there in West Africa is trash so I don't blame him. :manny:

And, I thought, those two-infected patients in ATL was too close for comfort:merchant:

...now, allegedly, it's right in my back-yard - well a couple train stops aways, but you get my drift:damn:

Can animals like dogs or cats get this?
No...there arent any diseases that affect both dogs/cats and humans. Viruses don't crossover unless the DNA b/w hosts is very similar as is the case in pigs, primates, and a few other animals. Limited cases where viruses jump from completely unrelated species to another.

EDIT: just thought about rabies actually. Only one i can think of that affects most mammals.

Ya, it slipped my mind for a second. But @1BadBamaFan , without boring you of all the nerdy details, a virus needs a host that has the required cellular machinery to make more it itself. If a host doesn't have those necessary enzymes/proteins in its genome, then the virus cannot replicate and is harmless. If the host does does, then the virus will hijack them and that what makes you sick. Certain animals have similar codes for proteins in their genome, so these are the animals that can share a virus between each other.

Didnt they say bats are a natural host of the ebola. And the same is a delicacy in Guniea
