I definitely agree with that. That's my only issue with hip-hop purists. They never want their artists to expand their sound. I too like traditional hip-hop when it comes to my favorite artist. Because they can get in a comfortable pocket. But I appreciate the creativity when trying something different. I may or may not like it but I appreciate the effort.

Yup. you hear it too.

yeah, and the funny thing is, to me, they box themselves in when they do that.

Com step out of his comfort zone and delievered an album you can tell that he made from a place of "this is where im at right now artisically"

Cats was still stuck on LFWC when EC dropped and just wasn't ready for where he was at as an artist at the time.

Same here, bruh.

yeah,. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. but the artist never knows unless they follow their heart and their own intutition.

LWFC is an amazing album. Sometimes you don't wanna here the same album over and over. He even said in a interview he was influenced by the Beatles etc. I feel like we as fans can fall into a group think mentality when it comes to our favorite artists and their projects they put out. I try to branch out of that at times.

Yeah.

Exactly, he was listening to a lot of different artists during that period, from The Beatles, to Jimi Hendrix to Stereolab, to Led Zepplein, to Radiohead to Pink Floyd. So he had all these different artists that he was studying for the first time and gaining influence from and that's how artists evolve with their art.

Bingo. I agree 100%

A lot of fans box artist in all too often; artist have to live their lives and their lives and things throughout life influence their work, sometimes it connects w/ the audience, sometimes it doesn't right away or at all.

But the experience is needed for the artist to grow.

True. I too listen to those artists especially Radiohead. People that have a ear for different genre's may be more open to their favorite artists experimenting. I'm taking a guess. I also agree with what you're saying. You're right artists have to live and experience to help them get back into that creative space. Artists like Maxwell and D'Angelo take so much time in between albums. I wish they would drop more music but all we can do as fans is ask lol.
My other favorite band are The Roots. They top have albums that sound similar but they too try different stuff. Albums like Phrenology, Undun, and "And Then You Shoot Your Cousin"

Yeah.

that's exactly what it is.

yup, they need that time to live life, so that they can reflect and come back into refresh and rejuvenated and ready to create again.

facts. Max and D' take a lot of time between projects, but for them, it works, cause when they come back, they're usually ready to tap back into their creative space and make magic again.

The Roots are talented. Phrenology was another experimental album during that same time Com dropped EC

they stepped outside of their comfort zone and came with something new and fresh.

a lot of people slept on it, but i thought it was a good album, a step away from the usual and into another direction

That's definitely true. Yea sometimes it is best to take as much time as possible to create something amazing. I remember Phrenology and EC dropped around the Sametime. Yea I liked those albums too. I feel the same way when I make my mixes/playlists for people I like to take time to put them together. Make sure they're well thought out before letting people hear them.

it's a damn shame we didn't get a Bilal album solely produced by Dilla :mjcry:

“Love for Sale” would have been the next best thing, shyt was heat but I don’t think Interscope will ever release it.

“Airtight revenge” and “A love surreal” also remind me of Dilla’s influence, though surreal leaned more into what Robert glasper was doing.

Album came out during the time of 50 Cent & Dipset mania...

Electric Circus sounded like it would fit in the blog era.

If Kendrick Lamar rapped over these beats, it would have been received better.

It’s crazy to step back and really appreciate com’s discography. So many concepts, so much versatility, lots of grown ass man shyt, and positivity.

Aside from Andre Benjamin and Beans, (though he doesn’t do it as much) Common is one my favorites when it comes to truly articulating positive feelings and a general love for things.

Only one album I truly couldn’t get into: “universal mind control”, and even the lead single was so catchy I still randomly, half-assed jook when it pops up in my head, in 2023, when no one is looking.

If ever there was an underrated, unsung, overlooked rapper, it’s him.

yessir

Phrenology had some joints on it

"Sacrifice"
"Quills"
"Water"
"p*ssy Galore"
"Thought @ Work"
"Rolling with Heat"
"Complexity"
"Rock You"

I wish the original version of"Break You Off" would've made the album
