I think it was fairly hated on, but hear me out.... When I first bought this, it was on a saturday. I got this and God's son the same day on a saturday night. I listened to it and though tit was one of the worst things I had ever heard. Especially considering it a follow up to LWFC. I listened to it a year later, it was still trash. I listened to it 7 years later. Still trash, and so forth. Back in 2018 or 2019, I started getting away from making hip hop music. I started doing soul, funk, house, using live instrumentation with no samples. I then put the cd in and listened to it and I yelled out to myself, "I GET IT!!! I GET IT!!!!!!!"
It wasn't meant to be a hip hop album. it was combining different genres while being like a fusion type of album. It's an album for the musicians. I truly understand it now and I love it.

Someone on a podcast says it got the hate because n-gga's wanted to be n-gga's and was into the grimey shyt back in 02 and first half of 03. Some also said it would've faired much better had it came out after Speakerboxx/The Love Below.

Now it looked at favorably

Rep to OP. The album was sonically ahead of its time and one of Com’s more memorable. That’s the effect Badu’s box be having on nikkas :hubie:. New Wave, I Am Music, Star 69, Liberation…Dilla was in his fukking bag. Plus we got some Neptunes gems on there too. I love this album. And the cover art is also dope.

Nah, it's trash. It deserves the hate. It's all over the place, maybe 2 standout tracks...he clashes with most tracks. It just didn't work for me. And I try to revisit this at least once a year. I'm just not a fan of new age hippie Com Sense. Ironically, I'm a fan of most of the supposed musical influences for this album. He probably should have used more of a singing flow on some of the tracks, or something more raspy blues-like. However, I also think that the album is so far left, that it doesn't allow for some to gather a fair assessment.

I do think that all artists should be allowed to experiment with different sounds and styles, if that is their true desire. However, I do not think that just because they did experiment means that it's good; "good because it's different." But there seems to be artists that are granted so much leeway in their musical growth, and others that aren't allowed to have any variation in their music.

nah.. this shyt trash. I appreciate any artist who takes a chance. We cant give Common props for every album he has made.

Common is usually a cant miss artist as far as albums, but we cant give him perfection status by giving this revisionist grades on this shyt. This was a miss, but I wont knock him down for it.

First half has some slappers like New Wave and Soul Power and I've had always had a soft spot for Come Close but the longer tracks on the second half lost me. Songs like Jimi was a Rockstar were just pretentious and didn't hit the mark. Electric Wire Hustle Flower is pretty corny too. 7/10 overall
