I'm not sure what he'll do if he doesn't reach his goal (wouldn't surprise me if he covers the rest of whatever remains), but Kickstarter couldn't work any other way. If you made it so the money is immediately given to the fundraiser, the contributions would be much more difficult to obtain. I know I wouldn't have opted to contribute if there were a chance that I'd lose that money if it fails to achieving its funding.

indiegogo.com works just like kickstarter but you once the campaign ends you get to keep what was donated (at a higher fee). With Kickstarter if Elzi's campaign ends at 24,999 he won't get funded because he was short by one dollar.

eL shouldve added more time to the Kickstarter campaign than 30 days, considering its the holidays and people are spending their funds elsewhere. 45 days wouldve been more feasible.

This isn't a donation though; this is more like a tentative preorder. If a product fails to meet its funding, it won't be produced, and those that pledge/preorder won't have anything to spend their money on.
This situation is a little bit different as it's hard to see a scenario where Elzhi doesn't release this album. He's sitting at a little over 16K right now, and he probably reaches at least 20K by the end of the period. Seems like it would be in his best interest to just cover the rest of that to fulfill the goal.

Well it appears eL did it! He eclipsed his goal of 25k. Let's hope he delivers the music we've been waitin for.
