North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
This façade associated with the phrase "real fans", "true fans" etc is a bunch of malarkey. Crowd funding is dope as hell and I have no problem with it. I do have a problem with an established artist using it to make an album. Cats are making albums in their home studios and paying to get it mixed and mastered. Ka made The Night's Gambit by himself. Paid for the mix and master, produced the CD and vinyl and sells it all himself through his website.

Again, Elzhi is making an album. This isn't a book that he trying to get published. It's not a movie or something that is so far out of his reach. Let's not church this up and call it what it is. Let me ask you, have you already pledged some funds?

1. What he's doing is not against the rules.
2. When people invest money they do so hoping the product will get made.
3. Elzhi brings credibility and has a proven track record of making a tangible product.
4. There are numerous pitches from established companies and people who have made successful products in the past.
5. When I say "true fans". I only say that because Elzhi will know that the people who do support it really want to buy it.
6. On last point in you having a problem with established artists. Which would you invest your money in first. An unknown with no proven track record or evidence to show you a actual product will get made or an established person/persons with a proven track record giving you a piece of mind of knowing you will eventually get something for your money?

folks are being picky, it's a new day and age with new methods, the game/old way isn't the same/works anymore.

fans need to conform just like the artist

i support El

I hear this. Let me be clear I am not saying 'fukk no' to the kickstarter funding road... more i am saying 'this is an interesting new marketing technique, but it smells like game'.

Fundamentally I think really Elhzi or his team realize, underground fans just download everything they don't purchase, but they do show love and like being part of movements. And the music industry wont move on or promote anything unless there are metrics behind it... So he is creating a movement that can clearly be quantified into metrics here. So he has an album that might end up being downloaded 200K times and then actually selling 50K copies, he throws up this kickstarter and gets the same money he woulda made off the album BEFORE the album is made... if it works he circumnavigated the whole piracy angle. BUT you cant promote to your fans 'yall nikkas bootleggers i aint even working on the album until you put a downpayment/deposit on it', so instead you promote 'i got to get the funds to produce and promote this album'. and thats cool... just aknowledging on my part that its game.

Add to this the fact that this dude is known to take long breaks between projects... and i aint hyped about pre paying.

Businesswise... if you cant make money selling records why are you doing fundraising campaigns to raise money to make a record that wont sell? cuz the goal aint to really to fund the making of the record its to monetize the record by bonding with the fans...

Either way I think the goal of this is more marketing than true funding, similar to how nipsey hustle did that $100 mixtape thing. Yeah Nipsey got 100K in cash, which is cool, but he ended up getting probably 1 million dollars in promotion from the talk around the concept of the $100 mixtape. I think this is similar, and in that light i am doing my part by talking about it... i am not hating on elhzi, but i aint giving you money to make an album, and then going and buying the album when it comes out, thats me buying the same thing twice, thats GAME. I applaud it, but i aint putting my money in it, just like i aint buying no 100 mixtape although i appreciate the campaign.

3. I reiterate, what Elzhi is trying to do is something that is not out of his reach. He has a track record and relationships that should have no problem getting him the funds to make an album.
5. This is no way to discern a "true fan" because the meaning is highly subjective and convoluted. You can say that a "true fan" has bought all the albums already. Are they now not a "true fan" because they don't want to participate in the kick starter? Your point makes no sense because it's implied that the people who support want to buy it. What if I just want the CD without the extra Kick Starter action? Where are the official "true fan" criteria? This is just an example because I saw that there will be a non Kick Starter version of the CD.
6. This question is loaded. If you have a proven track record without Kick Starter, how do I know you will produce with Kick Starter? You have 0 experience using the crowd source method but I see your point. I would only entertain proposals from artists that I mess with heavy. Using your question, what about the people who view Elzhi as an unknown? What track record does he have with them since they are unfamiliar? None of this even matters because if he doesn't meet the goal, it probably won't be made so this all goes up in smoke.

I'll ask again. Have you pledged your green help have a successful funding?

Lets take this up a notch and throw out kickstarter campaigns I would fund:

Kickstarter campaign:
Rule 1: all deposits held in escrow and only released to the artist once the record is uploaded to the net
Rule 2: if funding goal isnt met by 6/2014 all funds release from escrow and returned to public
Concept: Nas album, with no singles, radio tracks, attempts to appeal to the south, no women on the hooks, all production by DJ premier, executive produced by NO ID.
Funding goal: 5 million dollars

Ok.... A lot of kickstarter pitches are marketed to s specific group and a lot of crowdfunding is geared towards people reaching out to people that already know on twitter facebook etc.

So someone like Elzhi for example.. he's asking for $25,000. He has a big enough following to where he will have no problem getting funded (he shouldn't anyway). On twitter along he has over 48k followers. It's not like he's posting a project and hoping complete strangers give him money. I honestly don't see the difference in an artist making an album and saying "please buy the music I made" or an artist asking for money and saying "please help me make my music and you will get a copy". its the same thing. You look at kickstarter as being small time. I think its an innovative way to get something created.

Rule 1.. that don't make since. kickstarter is used to help someone create a project.. that's why its called kickstarter. Holding the money hostage until the project is created defeats the whole purpose.
Rule 2. A project on kickstarter doesn't get funded unless the goal is met. So if someone has a goal of 10k and they only get to 9,999. they don't get anything.

Using what Scuba just said, cats download everything. Do you think he'll get $25K in 30 days? His (and everyone else's) fans download everything. He's operating on blind faith. Is there even a snippet of what to expect? Again, I have nothing against crowd funding. It's just that Elzhi isn't someone that strikes me as hard up for cash like a new comer trying to get something made to raise his profile. I won't be donating. That's all I know.

I have no issue with supporting. Elzhi, IMO, is one of the GOATs and his music is always of the highest calibre so the "long wait" in between projects (3 years isn't that long tbh) doesn't bother me.

I hear you, but rule 1 is a big problem for projects with kickstarter... this is why a lot of projects run into problems, i dont think in reality elhzi REALLY needs the cash to make an album, nor do many other kickstarter campaigns... they just rephrase there pitch to portray a straight pay for services as a crowd funding angle. see thats what i am talking about... i know kickstarter

folks putting up money and dudes running off are a BIG problem
folks really just wanting to pay for services/product and instead having to go with a fake crowdfunding

anyways i am just throwing out interesting concepts that i would get excited about, i am not really going to attempt to kickstarter them

I would think he can get to those numbers pretty easily. if he can get half his twitter followers to donate a dollar then this should fly. I personally think dudes are experimenting with new ways to monetize their movement, i think the underlying problem is fans have grown accustomed to not paying for music, but they are still willing to pay for other stuff even just to be part of a movement.

Realistically Elhzi should be able to do 10 shows over the course of six months and raise this amount of money. i dont think this is really about the money, i think this is a marketing plan.

this is embarrassing. a damn kickstarter? how much could 14kt or Waajeed charge for beats anyways? Mello Music Group or Fat Beats would sponsor an Elzhi album. He's trying to beat people in the head for strip club money.
