The point is that I don't like him doing it off rip for reasons that I've already stated. Do you think he has $25,000 worth of hardcore fans? It might be successful and for the cats chipping in, I hope so. It doesn't pick me up nor lay me down because I'm not donating but it's wack.
As far as the cost to produce the product, like I and other have said, he is not some new guy with no clout and he must have positive relationships with people in the position to m=handle that for him. ELmatic came out digitally, CD and with vinyl. There was no crowd source effort for that.
When I say "he's just making an album" I mean that it is something that is not beyond his means. I'm talking about scale as well. A movie is an entirely different beast. I can't really speak on the literature game but I'm sure it has it's own hurdles. I gave examples that people make their music in home "studios", pay for the sample, mix and master as well as productions costs from their own pockets. As anyone in the thread about Ka and The Night's Gambit. I'm not saying that he shouldn't use kick starter, I'm just saying it's wack.
This part about the indie rock community means nothing. I'd buy the CD straight up. I don't need or want to participate in the extra.
I got you and agree with your sentiments. I see what you mean about the movement thing, I was just being sepcific to Elzhi.
Yes, I think he has $25,000 worth of hardcore fans.
Which in comparison to other bands/artists isn't much at all.
Other people have raised well over a $100,000, allowing them to send
music directly to their fans, tour, purchase better equipment etc.
We have no idea how much it'll cost to create his album.
So I doubt we can sit here and say what is or isn't beyond
his means when creating this album.
I mean his last project had session musicians, and a composer
breaking down classic Hip Hop tracks.
Which is up and away more expensive and difficult
than doing record flips.
And that doesn't even account for shooting videos.paying
for studio time,mixing/mastering, pressing up CD's, etc.
On top of that a lot of underground producers and rappers
don't pay shyt for samples because 9 times out of 10 the
people who are being sampled have no idea about the project
or it's release.
You mention El matic didn't have crowd funding but
SOMEONE was footing the bill, it's not as simple as
"Record and Release".
Because while recording that project money is being spent.
Releasing that project money is being spent.
Promoting that project money is being spent.
Producing the CD's, Vinyl's, T-Shirts, etc. money....is...being...spent....
All of that costs cash, and even then they aren't guaranteed
to sell any of that.
With crowd funding, people are paying DIRECTLY for what
they want, there isn't nearly as much financial risk.
You want a T-Shirt with your album ? Fine, Done Deal.
You want a whole hard copy album collection ? Fine. Done Deal.
You want the Vinyl and just the CD ? Fine. Done Deal.
The part about the Indie Rock Community means A LOT.
It highlights just how much one community values the
music verses another.
You can't see it but it's plain as day to me judging by all
the responses in this very thread.
And you personally may have no issue with copping the album but
there are many others on here who would likely download (something even
I am guilty of....)
