The only constructive criticism I could give Em at this point would be to do some scratch hooks or maybe no hooks at all, stick with slower or mid-tempo beats, and try out some production from cats you've got right there on your team like Alchemist. Maybe try an EP or something with one producer.

Exactly this.

Alchemist, scratch hooks, EP length.

If he's going to be doing full length albums that require him to sell even a fraction of what he used to sell on Interscope, he needs to be working with Dre exclusively or (and this is something I wish one of the suits up there would see), let Kendrick EP a project for him since Em has never been big on musicality.

That's his real problem and something that should be put into perspective. He's an underground rapper with a big budget and platform because he's white. He was never meant to be working with 14 different producers and rapping over mainstream shyt like that. When he has someone who can guide him musically (Dre, Bass Brothers) he can do what he does, which is rap nice, which he can still do. But one of his biggest strengths is his clarity which doesn't come through over this double time/trap shyt.

Is that why rap is so lazy now? Gotta cater to the short attention spans of the Vine generation?
Nah, I don't think it's an either/or.

When I say his music requires a high attention span, I should have said you can't really listen to it in any context outside of headphones on trying to hang onto every word. It's not an enjoyable listening experience. Jay and Nas don't make short attention span music but they don't have harsh sounding voices that aren't pleasant to listen to. They've got double entendres and layered meanings, and concept songs. They've got stuff that you pick up on the more you listen to it, and they reward long attention spans and repeat listens. But they aren't exhausting to listen to either. Eminem can be tiring and a chore to listen to. That's all I mean. Eminem's voice is memorable but it's also one of the most annoying in hip-hop IMO. It's just abrasive and if you aren't trying to follow every single syllable then it's annoying to listen to.

I think the album is his best work in a decade at least though.

His first project was an EP right? Didn't he get signed because Dre heard the EP? Or did Dre hear something else?

Yep.

No reason ALC can't cook up something with a similar tempo. And there's no reason for him to not be able to slow down the flow and hop back into his natural pocket and come up with something at LEAST on par with what he's spitting now if not way better.
