Above the fray.
It really depends on the religion. Christrian oromo do tend marry christian amaharas.

thanks....thought they were just different ethnically....what you're saying hints to one group ggneerally having different religious beleifs than the other group

THAT might be a problem
Disagree. I actually think it's the reverse that because these immigrant groups are away from their country of origin they go the extra mile to hold on or preserve certain norms from the country of origin especially if there is a slim to inexistent chance of going back (Ethiopia after the famine was deemed hopeless). I grew up with a couple of Nigerian guys born and raised in the US both Igbos and they ended up marrying Igbo women as they were constantly being reinforced that notion by their parents.

However, there are still some cases where full assimilation does occur whether it is marrying someone from a different ethnic group that you wouldn't even entertain at home or marrying a non-African. But if you asked the parents, they would like to preserve some of the traditions.
Ive seen in both ways.
Back home you identified by your ethnic group....in America..you are Ethiopian or Nigerian and will live among others from your country, work with ,worship with, etc in ways that you might not have back home. Your identity in America is forged by your parents' nationality first.
oh..and of course......the kids have to stick together in school.......maybe clique up for protection.

This, even here in the NY/NJ area, most African marriages i've witnessed have been among people originally from their villages or closeby areas back home, within the same religion, same ethnic group. Rarely seen intraethnic weddings among countrymen.
how many generations does that last, though?

other ethnic groups did the same thing in the first generation...but after that?

I mean nationality eventually becomes more important after the first gen since the 2nd and later do not have the same exposure to different ethnic group interactions and cultural norms that are present from their parents countries. That's a different situation altogether.

The other important element that comes into play when it comes to marriages are also the faiths of each partner.

I thought they were in DC since the 80s or 90s especially when Ethiopia was suffering from that famine?
Most Africans who are in DMV came in 80s and went to HU. The thing with Ethiopians is that during the 80s crack era, while many black folks wanted to get the hell out of the city and head for the burbs, a lot of Ethiopians buckled down and bought houses/started businesses. back when property was cheap as fukk and DC was damn near Detroit status. for that reason 9th street in shaw will forever be Little Ethiopia no matter how much white gentrification comes thru

You may want to speak for yourself on this one breh...all that shyt goes out the window once they've gone to college or moved out of their parents house.
