I happen to go to a school that is composed of people making connections, so I would be pretty much set job wise once I graduate, but I see a lot of the Black kids who graduate from my school do so without connections, and with a garbage major, and end up in some kind of retail, or low-level corporate position.
Its sad, but networking has always and is continuing to be a major requirement. Unless you're an academic superstar in your major and plan on going for higher education or moving into a niche job, it will be tough out there, that's for anybody, if you're Black, it just got even more difficult.
The problem with moving out of the country to work is that no one wants to actually do that. You lose all your friends and family and are dropped into an unfamiliar environment all to make low six figures. That isn't something I would cosign. And I know how industry is booming in Nigeria and South Africa, as well as China. You can be come an overnight millionaire in China, but most people don't want to do that, me included.
And yes, we do need more Black women and men in STEM, a lot more. We need them filling up lecture halls and continuing to reign at the top of their class. That won't solve the problem, but it will help a little.
