Let me break it down... From economics major standpoint.

People are working longer. The aftermath of the latest recession have people shaking in their boots and working harder than before.

Surplus of labor across all skills so that drove wages down or stabilized them while prices for goods increase (stagflation).

Technological advances destroyed a lot of jobs. My theory is America is moving towards a point of efficiency that most people won't need to work to operate the country.

The credit system has to be reset to zero because it lost it is purpose of providing capital to a public without resources.

"media studies"

:mjlol::russ:

ive seen it waaay too many times. These black kids get to college and choose the easiest major that they can find simply so they can have time to enjoy the party aspect of college and they care more about the black frats and sororities than about really doing something worthwhile.

Yeah the white kids are doing it too..but the difference is when billy takes media studies and graduates, he can call up his uncle and distant relatives and ask if they can submit his resume to the company they work for. Billy goes for an interview with a foot in the door already and is on his way

Latrell graduates with media studies and he has no such connections...

Yeah the society tells you to "chase your dreams and do what you want"..but we as black folks need to start thinking more practical. Take a major that is actually applicable and somewhat useful.

Not that silly "communications" or "media studies" or whatever other bullshyt liberal arts theyve decided to tack on just to graduate.

exactly at my work right now that im leaving soon, there are a bunch of young 20 year olds who got a job because their parents work there and most are always white.

managers just do the formalities the interviews etc. but already know who they are giving it to.

PLus companies would rather hire a black woman over a black male as it kills two quotas a woman and a minority.

This...

Brothers do not know much is at play with this in bold. Black women can be some of the rudest and inefficient mofos, my gosh! I guess nothing beats emasculating the black male and keeping our women dependent on them and looking down at us.

Yeah, I can relate to this on a personal level especially considering I graduated right when the recession hit. Shyt was rough. :wow: :to:

My first job out of college wasn't bad, job paid like 38k with good benefits and a travel stipend...but I got laid off after like six months. The job I got after that barely paid $30k (with crappy/expensive benefits) and I was stuck there for a couple years, didn't really get what I'd consider my break until I was 27. And I only recently hit the $50k mark and I'm almost 30.

We can complain about what majors people pick or whatever, but to be honest I think the bigger factor is just that white college grads tend to have an inherent advantage due to having social connections that black people just don't have in most cases. For example a white chick I graduated with (who was a massive airhead) had a granddad that was a VP of an IT company, so she was pretty much set from the jump. Not only did I not have anybody like that in my family, but I didn't even have anybody that had finished university. So in a case like that she's just in a better position off GP, regardless of major or grades.

Hell yeah blacks are less likely to get hired than whites across the board. I read an article that said blacks with college degrees had less wealth than white high school dropouts. Other studies concluded that black college students were just as likely to land jobs as white high school dropouts.

White people own most businesses and wealth in America at the end of the day. Racism in hiring practices is the cause of the structural unemployment that disproportionately effects blacks in ever big city and metro area in America.

One of the things you can't do is just sit around the house and only apply for jobs online. Your application gets lost in the shuffle. And if you check of "black" under the mandatory diversity form on the application, the odds are against you. You have a better bet going in person to temp agencies in your area for lines of work you qualify for and they'll help you. With online job applications, there is too much competition. Many online job ad's get thousands of responses within hours of being posted.

Also, if you have real skills, you can get hired. It doesn't matter if you work in IT, you're a plumber, you're a diesel mechanic or you can drive a forklift. Employers are looking for people with skills. The average liberal arts program at the average university doesn't teach people any real valuable skills. The problem is that college ain't what it used to be. More and more folks are getting degrees because it's an educational arms race. I got a bachelor's degree, but it's never helped me much. I also can't stand the racist "professional" culture out here in the DC area which imposes an oppressive standard of whiteness as the norm.

http://everydayfeminism.com/2015/02/professionalism-and-oppression/

At the end of the day it's who you know. Spend time networking in college with folks who'll help you get a job. They're plentiful out here in the Baltimore-Washington corridor area, you just gotta find them. And it is hella easier for black women as opposed to black men because women are seen as less intimidating by cacs.

Yep. Too many people taking the path of least resistance.

If you really need to give a lot of thought about what you're going to do with your degree, you're probably majoring in something worthless.

The path should be always be clear.

:ohhh:yeah bros are already up on the divide and conquer tactics with propping up bw in professional positions while creating an additional hurdle for males but i dont want to fall in that divisive trap so ill let them do them...theres not really women in my industry anyway fortunately to compete with. but we already know 1. blacks have to be alot more qualified for the same job 2. theres hiring discrimination off the bat just looking at an applicants name 3. it's all about network and connections where blacks are at a disadvantage. the main time blacks are really getting hired is when theres a government requirement in order to get a contract or something like that. AA definitely doesnt benefit black guys the way you think. otherwise :camby:id just say make sure to try to go into an industry where your skills are very specialized and move to a top 5 job market. it's sad though because k-12 emphasizes do what you love to kids when employers specifically want a STEM skillset and the U.S. educational system is just understanding this concept when other countries curriculum is tailored for it. you either do an applied curriculum for the job you want or go into the trades. the school system in the country is doing people a disservice trying to create the well rounded student with all these extra curriculurs, humanities, etc. at the same time everyone isn't meant for STEM so why are all other departments at universities even open if theyre not ensuring skills leading to gainful employment? At the end of the day university is a business just like anything else

If you were white you'd be in already trust me.

In pretty sure only reason I got hired at my job now to this day was my old manager was a dope old white lady with a daughter married to a black man

I've gotten interviews for prominent stuff off my resume alone but bombed in interviews because I do not care to be in corporate america. Sometimes, it is as simple as how the resumes look. Lie and/or exaggerate. That's how cacs get on. Playing fair do not take care.

I want to be in entertainment and music so I have to go out west. I know it may not be easy but :yeshrug:.

I see those majors and it is ehh. Public relations!?!?! They're giving that position to a bytch first quarter. Then it is about being certified in something. Companies use those certs to attract more business as well.

I swear life can change by simply moving.
That's why I moved to NYC...

I never cared for corporate America just like you...I want to be in entertainment cause even with all of the stuff I have done that's what I'm the best at. I was never satisfied just having a career and that being the sum whole embodiment of my existence. I just knew it was gonna be rough but I didn't realize how rough.

Like my last living situation I was living with three of my friends (all white)...none of them went to college. And they were all able to find work easy while I struggled to find anything really viable so I just took whatever I could find.

The odds are against us but fukkit you just gotta keep grinding and never give up.
