In the NFL, you're blacked out locally if the tickets aren't sold.

In the NBA, depending on what your team shells out, it may not matter. Your game may not come on regardless depending on the situation. A really bad team in a small market might not shell out what it costs to have 82 games broadcast.
That's not a blackout though. A blackout in the NBA is when NBA TV is showing a game, say Houston vs Indy, if you live in Houston or Indy NBA TV will be blacked out. You have to watch your local regional carrier channel. That's a blackout in the NBA. For a local team and their carrier(like Fox sports) its all about the contract they sign and the demand in the area to watch that team. Hell back in the day the Clipps would skip a few broadcast over the coarse of a season as well and this is the number two market in the nation. Its all about demand and your team playing good ball.

The owners' wealth never becomes part of the narrative though. All we hear about is the players. The owners have their money before basketball, but they don't want their investment to lose worth either. If no games are played and the league becomes a mess, no one is going to want to buy another team.

The players won't be smart enough to stash their current earnings to dig in for a real fight though.

We're kinda already getting there. We've already seen situations where nobody wanted to buy a team because they couldn't move them. That's showing at least a flaw in the infrastructure. Nobody wants to buy the Bucks to keep the Bucks there or T'wolves or when the Hornets were up for sale before Tom Benson saved them

That's not what I'm talking about (and usually those games are blacked out because you can see it somewhere else. I'm talking about games that don't make it to TV at all).

That's what I'm saying though. How fukked up do you have to be where you can't air every game?

Remember the Expos? They couldn't air their games on TV after a while. You could only hear it in French on the radio or watch the other team's broadcast. Eventually they couldn't save shyt there so MLB bought it and eventually moved it. The only reason why it's hasn't happened since Seattle is due to sentimental reasons. It's literally the only reason why guys like Herb Kohl and Glen Taylor still stick around and the teams won't when they die.

They shouldn't expect to have to keep a team in place either after what Stern let Bennett do with the Sonics/Thunder. It's also the reason the Kings sold for a record $535 million. Seattle will forever be used as a bargaining chip when teams go up for sale or aren't giving the league what they want.

That's not the fans fault, that's the NBA's fault for marketing talent over teams and games.
No, they market certain talents and certain teams. Read this post below.
I've been blessed to have a friend who works for the NBA, so even tho Comcast doesn't have HD league pass, I have league pass for free via apple TV.

Tonight is a good example of what I'm saying. The Oklahoma City Thunder are playing the Phoenix Suns.......Anyone who knows anything about basketball at this point knows you're getting a high scoring basketball game (the total is like 217) between the best team in the Western Conference and an up & coming team with Jeff Hornacek, who should be the coach of the year their star Goran Dragic playing out of his mind. Is that on television? No, a game between the Lakers and Clippers is....The Lakers aren't relevant and even when Kobe was there last year it was clear that the Lakers were too old.

The Spurs vs Heat are also on television, good match up but both teams are coasting so at any given time, games involving these teams will be a dud or a classic.

The bottom line is there needs to be a way to flex games.
John Wall, Demar Derozan, Dragic and Big Al have been amazing this year. But their games aren't on TV. How is that marketing talent? They are stuck on the name teams outside of Boston.

Initially Seattle wasn't used as the bargaining chip. LA was (and then VA). That, and it was the Maloofs who were gonna move the Kings before they thought about selling to Hansen.

The owners of the teams I mentioned are trying to I guess put in writing that they can't move the team from their current location even after selling it. Once they wanted to do that, all interest in buying the team dried up. Once they die, Hansen's gonna be all over it. Larry Ellison is gonna be all over it, but not if they can't uproot like Bennett did. Bennett just outhustled everyone.

These owners are making money hand over fist and franchises are selling for record amounts. The next TV deal is gonna be massive too, but some of you want a hard cap and all this other bullshyt. :stopitslime:

If there's a hard cap, it should be at least $100 million. All these teams are caking. Bill Simmons brought up a great comparison in his latest column. Brian McCann is making more money for the Yankees than LeBron. Tell me how that's right. :stopitslime:

There shouldn't be a lockout; there should be a players strike.
You notice how before the lockout they were complaining that they were all in the red then the season after they were making record profits. And they refused to show their books to the NBAPA too right?

I have league pass.. I haven't seen a COMPLETE non showing of a game yet. For example a Sacramento vs Milwaukee. You might have one feed only. Comcast-Sac might broadcast the game but Fox Sports Wisconsin will skip this game or vise versa. You will get this a few times during the season. but its all about the demand for that area. These channels need to fill programming and there's not that many teams in these areas. If the Bucks or Kings are playoff bound, fun to watch and the demand is there they're showing every game no bout.
