There are a few issues I see with the obesity epidemic in the black community. I've moved from a predominately white environment to Chicago and some of the things I've seen food wise is crazy. First of all, I used to live on a street with at least 4 fried chicken shops on two blocks, three liquor stores, a "grocery" (corner) store that sells already moldy, spoiled produce, and a few more small food shops. There is no grocery store for miles. It's a food desert. If anyone wanted to eat healthy and didn't have adequate transportation it would be a HUGE hassle.

I see women in the store on the 1st with the link card with two carts full of TV dinners and sugary cereals while their kids are begging for candy. No fresh veggies, or even canned for that matter are in the cart. But! There is a reason for this. My cousin who is a case worker for the city was talking to me about this. She bought up a valid point that I never thought of. She said first of all, if someone is on food stamps (I believe) they get their money on the 1st. Fresh produce isn't going to last for the whole month. A lot of the families don't have stable living arrangements so they buy non perishable food which is meant to last but laden with chemicals and preservatives. Now, I obviously know not all black people live in poverty, but obesity has become a largely economic issue.

Black women have larger frames as well. I am victim of this myself. I don't eat that badly but I struggle with my weight and I see people that weigh less than me look much larger. I'm not saying I'm at my healthiest and there aren't things I can do to improve my situation (I'm working on it), but I wouldn't say I LOOK fat. I am shapes...

I think there has been a push to educate people on the issue in the community. I see some urban gardens popping up where people are able to plant fruits and veggies and some have taken advantage, but obviously not everyone knows. I actually found a list of black owned farms in each state where they sell their produce or participate in farmer's markets. I'm going to see if I can find it.
Why are you all in People's shopping carts making observations? Get you some business. You dont know what they already had at home._

fukk that:camby: we need more fat shaming. We've got men and women running around thinking this fat shyt is cute. We don't shame enough because we're too busy giving passes to dysfunctional destructive behavior. This liberal left wing shyt really has people's minds fukked up.

While I disagree with the fat positivity movement, I agree that for the most part shaming someone into losing weight is fukked up. I use to be 100+ overweight and i didn't get into shape cause people kept pointing the obvious, that just made me want to avoid them.

Weight loss is a personal journey, that involves correcting mental issues as well the physical.

I suspect that people blowing smile up your ass trying to make you feel good about bein fat didn't help you get in shape either:francis:

I don't recommend putting people down and being mean spirited is the best way to motivate people to lose weight. I wouldn't recommend coddling and enabling either. I say tough love, honesty, and support is the best way.

If you stop fat shaming then you have to stop all shaming of people (which is how it should be anyway, but we live in the real world)

I get "skinny shamed" all of the time. I'm slim but not anorexic and in shape..All I hear is "you need to eat" "you're so skinny" "skinnyminnie"...yada yada yada..and it does affect me in some way mentally..if this has been my body type for all of my life and people continuously tell you that you're "not right" it strikes a nerve..

And don't say, "oh it's different" or that being skinny is a good thing...because thats not supposed to be the narrative of a "black woman"

I get the sentiment but as someone who is heavy set I will always try to lose weight no matter what because I know I have a better chance of living a longer healthier life. I added jumping rope to my workout and I'm glad to say I lost twenty-five pounds since May with this addition to my workout and with my different eating habits hopefully I can reach my goal. I'm blessed to always have a regular workout regime because honestly if I didn't I'd be a real fat fukk.

Whats this myth that its more expensive to eat healthy?

Its people in Africa who don't even have this information on 'healthy eating', they aint got these smartphones where they can search it online

Here we have people who do but for some reason continue to eat shyt.

Excuses, excuses, excuses

None of my business. Hell i'm overweight myself. What business do i have telling a man/woman how to live their lives. THo i do have a problem with people who fatshame but show compassion to drug addicts. :francis:

Besides the world is overpopulated as it is. So when i see
  • Skinny or fat mofos doing drugs
  • 300 lbs mofos not even trying to lookout for their health
  • Skinny mofos taking risks they dont need to be taking (unsafe car and motorcycle racing)
  • etc
I say let them . If anything i applaud their courage but have no problem if they fall out and die. Like we say in my country "If you're dead , you're wrong"

Let skinny people give nutritional advice, brehs. Anyone serious about getting fit, don't take any information from this thread, majority of these fukks don't know what the fukk they are talking about. The nutritional section of bodybuilding.com has the best sticky threads for starting out, so much important information with little effort required on your part. Or you can PM, if you are serious about this.

Pretty much, a lot of folks just get mad cause they don't get low dangling fruit to crack jokes and get easy daps with. Ain't got shyt to do with thinking of someone's best interest at mind.

If you serious about getting shyt together, folks who are active in the gym community are good people to chat with.
