And that is the reason the DMV started. All the things you’re explaining. Having to be with a band. Indie acts. A little light. Entertainment doesn’t do well here. Etc.

Wale is the only semi household name and rap been out since the 70s. And we got dmv nikkas fighting if he really from md. Trel would be there and nikkas fighting if he really from va. Logic another and he’s from md.

DC is not the place to blow for rappers. But it is a grimy hood spot that has a rep when you say “I’m from DC”. So let these md and va nikkas claim it if they want. We’ll take that and combine it with a scene that does have household names. And with the added numbers of 3 areas, we can be a big area instead of 30 miles of circumference.

Obviously we see it didn’t work. But that was the plan

The thing is...I think every artist even within whatever crew their part of...had to do for self. Because you gotta think, nikkas got kids, they come from rough situations, and all that. So whatever some of them can do to come up, they're going to do. So the music will take the backburner and you'll either see some of these guys hustling and getting knocked. Or some of them straighten up and get a government. Very rarely is it both where you working and still making a lot of music. I'd say Asheru and Kokayi are the best examples of it. Hell, Black Indian, he works with the youth in the system now but still drops joints. Head Roc works with the Washington Lawyers for the Arts (WALA) and he's about to put out some new music. Wes Felton teaches at a school part time I think and hits the road with Raheem DeVaughn whenever there's a CrossRhodes show.

Now, when Wale popped up,everyone I remember from running around on U Street didn't recognize dude. We'd see Fat Trel every once in a while at a few shows. I think in College Park, you had to catch Logic. Everyone kind of scratched their heads like "we don't know this guy?" but later on, I realized he was working with the go go bands in the scene more and he got himself a good publicist to put him in a good position. So with that said, it was proof of how much the scene was fragmented and how much people, mostly individually, go for theirs.

I'm putting in bold the names I have never heard of. Lyriciss and Sub are good peoples. Known Oddisee and Phil Ade for years. I just remember Crank had a different name like X-Quiz or something but I don't think I met him. Never met Logic but he was big fan of one of my homies who I came up with doing music, Flex Matthews.

Rico Nasty (Largo)

Shabazz PBG (Seat Pleasant)

Q Da Fool (Largo Rd)

Goonew (Forest Creek)

Sugg Savage (Fort Washington)

Ciscero (PG County)

Mike of Doom (PG County)

Goldlink (Landover/DC)

Jay IDK (PG County)

WillThaRapper (Cap Heights)

Young Simba (Mo County)

Lil Dude (Riverdale/ATL)

It's a fukking double-standard. Wale and Logic grew up in MD but actually lived in poor neighborhoods but Q who is from one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in America is loved like a motherfukka.

That’s really because Mo County is whiter than PG, one of the most wealthy counties in America, and doesn’t have the street stamp that PG has. To even someone like me that grew up in downtown Silver Spring a place like Gaithersburg is another world and is much more suburban but it actually has some of the worse neighborhoods in the county and a lot of DC residents are being relocated out there because Silver Spring is also going through gentrification and rent increases.

It’s totally an image thing stemming from that imaginary totem pole of street cred. What I will say tho is that DC in the past was also a dangerous city for out of town rappers too except for the most respected and revered ones so the hatin wasn’t limited to locals only.

I can see a PG nikka claiming DC to nikkas not familiar with the area, but Montgomery County?

Nah, you just a Maryland nikka.

That’s like a nikka from Woodbridge, VA claiming DC :mjlol:
what about silver spring and Bethesda ?

Tbh, I ain’t even know Bethesda and Silver Spring was MoCo, and my twins was born in Silver Spring when I lived out Laurel. :snoop:

I always assumed everything right outside DC was PG County

I ain’t a DC nikka but I wouldn’t see an issue with either area claiming the District.

When I think of MoCo, I think of shyt like Rockville

Two places where you gotta have money to live at. However, Silver Spring is bigger than I thought with all kinds of people who are middle class that live there more so than Bethesda. If I want to impress a broad with some wine and shyt, or go to a quiet ass movie theater, those are two areas I hit up. Lol. I've never heard anyone lump them into the category of being a part of DC. They're really their own areas. Like Suitland or Forestville or Hyattsvillle though they somewhat have a similar layout.

I dunno, breh. If you say you from DC, you say either NW/NE/SW/SE and name the street/block from what I recall.
Or you can always say the DC area. That's just what I've known. I'm originally from TN and I've been in DC for 20 years so everyone who has lived in DC will say the part of DC and name the street. If you from PG, Mo County, and etc., you say that. Still part of the area.
