Reminds me of the time I told an engineer they should consider returning to
school for a master's degree at a lesser known state school.
The look of disgust on their face at the idea of attending a school without a potent
brand name is hilarious in retrospect.
Status is a powerful thing and people will do a lot to get a bit of it, including sending their
kids to schools with a strong name especially if it means their children will graduate
without facing the fear of debt, having classmates whose parents are also rich and powerful
and developing connections which will ensure their success past the graduation date.
This reminds me of those career fields filled with nepotism (like my own....) where asshats get
handed the chance to get a sweet gig simply because of who they know, who their fathers know,
or who their mothers slept with. Giving them a substantial leg up over the average joe just shooting their
shot trying to get in.
I won't lie, I want the kids that I'll eventually have to succeed but I DO NOT want cheat, lie, scam etc.
them to success. Whole story is legitimately disgusting but it also mirrors my own experiences
especially with young, ignorant, racist white men being paid handsomely because their
grandpa or uncle or father worked at a corporation for 30 years and they could walk into a job
upon graduating highschool or college.
