I imagine most people don't learn the hard sciences because it takes years of school and is a very costly investment that may not pay off. To your 2nd point, why does cost need rigor? Why is paying to learn something you like and want to do a thing you look down on? You might worship math and science a little too much. They are important and I think required learning material but its not the end all be all, you can also use those to enhance your non math and science related interests.

Society is better off with her being a radiologist. Let's say she did make Janet's dance team Janet is retired now. And this chik is in her late 40's.I think both she and the country is better off in general.

Everything needs to be balanced. You're typing on a phone, computer or tablet designed and produced by someone. I'm pretty sure they also rather have some artsy fartsy job with plenty of time off to "find themselves" and get that degree in underwater basket weaving that is their current passion. Someone has to take the nose to the grindstone jobs and because those jobs are "hard" and indemand they become essentially "forever jobs" Just like that tenured underwater basketweaving Professor that drives up the cost for school.
