Pre-ordered it, and soon as I get home from work, I'm jumping in and getting started on my first playthrough in years.

Yeah I've played War of the Lions so much I don't really see much reason dropping $50 for this.

A real treat for any newcommers to the game though.

Gave it a test run through the first few story battles and side fights. The graphical update is nice. The voice acting for all dialogue genuinely hits different. The UI improvements for quality of life are seriously refreshing. There are certain lines of dialogue where I never knew the tone, so having a VA express it actually enhances those scenes by a lot. The old menus were always cumbersome and one of my biggest complaints about the game, but a lot of that is fixed.

If you've beaten the game a bunch of times over the years, this isn't reinventing the wheel. But it's definitely the way I'll go about revisiting the franchise from now on. Just a much smoother way to play with better presentation all-around and since I've been beating this jawn since the original, I'm not too pressed about the missing War of the Lions expansion pack (that's really all it is, a primitive version of expansion packs) that we'll probably get in the future if this is successful.

For 50 bones, I think it's well worth it for big fans of the game or people who never tried it. If you liked FFT but it's not in your top-10 RPGs all-time, just wait for a discount. Also, if you're looking at Silent Hill F or Ghost of Yotei, then I'd say grab those and wait. Suikoden's remaster came out this year and is already seeing pretty consistent 10 dollar markdowns.

One last note: Fast Forward is the best thing to happen to all these old RPGs. Skipping past combat animations you've seen repeatedly or cut scenes that have tracking shots that drag seems like a minor thing, but it's really nice if you're like and rerun these games once every couple years.

Tip for newcomers:
Get the "throw stone" skill ASAP and the Focus skill after that. They're really helpful to accumulate Job Points early on, and throw stone is great against monsters who counter before you've built up a white priest or alchemist. Keep your guys alive, drag out the early fights, and steal abilities from the crystals that appear when defeated enemies disappear after three turns. It's simple, and will really help while you adjust to the difficulty and figure out your character builds.

Looking forward to playing through this again. I know I'm going to be a coward and play it exactly like I did back in 1999 and make Ramza a monk with the ninja's two swords ability so I can dominate again instead of trying something new.

That's the GOAT build for Ramza. I typically mess around with my random mercenaries to experiment with builds. But Ramza's always getting rushed to the monk class and ninja class for me.

Great remake especially if you never played it before. They should add the extras from WOL as DLC or something but it's great to allow modern audiences to experience it especially first timers.
