it’s been proven that turn based games can be very successful in modern gaming, and franchises like this need to excite their core base first and foremost.

I think a modern “traditional” FF game would do really well and they can save some money on trying to compete with the AAA cinematic games they think they need to chase.

I've been criticized for saying so but the series needs to cater to it's actual fans and stop chasing these elusive fans that deep down don't even really like the type of games this series was known for. The original fans don't want character action games they want a party based turn based RPG with a creative battle system.

They're trying to dumb the series down to widen it's appeal and they abandoned the original fans. Only a fraction of those fans bought it and this other audience they're chasing didn't seem to take to it either. They've been lost in the wilderness since after releasing X. XII was solid but it was also part of the decline that accelerated with XIII.

X really broke them.

That's why I said X was their last good game.

I wish the story was better. The character work was so shoddy. Like the setup of Clive's mom

shytting on him for not being the Phoenix and then murking his father was so compelling from a psychological perspective, and I just feel like it wasn't explored as much as it could have been. Especially when he sees her again. I feel like there was more to be said than was said. No "look at me now, mom. I'm Ifrit. I'm not worthless" where it's revealed she still doesn't value him, or hates that he took so long to awaken. No moment where she acts all fake and loving now that she's seen that he's got some shyt in him too. No. She's just very one note evil. She sees Clive, shyts on him some more, and then kills herself. Like okay.

And that's my issue with many of the storylines in this game. It just feels like they took the wrong lessons from Game of Thrones. You've got very interesting characters dying way before they even get a chance to matter or do intriguing things which would have elevated the story.

Benedikta dying so early was insane. she could have done more, I feel like. Same with Cid.

I just wished we had more story beats, because everything else was amazing.

Nah, it was 12.

For whatever reason they really struggled with the HD era and for another whatever reason decided that FF needed to be like those shytty advent children movies and have several cinematics even thought the technology was there for them to just use a more detailed version of their regular character models for the cutscenes.

People only really came around to 12 after the fall off of 13 and beyond. I thought 12 was solid when I originally played it but it was worse than 9. Nothing since 12 has been as good as it though not counting remakes.

Some people liked 12, some people hated 12. It was a divisive title that didn't get near universal praise of X. X also aged well; you could play it today and it feels like a fresh new game.

I guess turn based doesn't work anymore. Square showed us how it's done.

Are you trying to say there is a big difference in those scores? Especially when you consider one has the baggage and expectations of a multi decade IP and the other is a new IP.
Baggage and expectations of a franchise that basically resets itself every entry and outside a few shared themes is different each time?

It’s funny turned based games are doing fine and being well received but Square says they don’t work for modern audiences.

You don’t even know how much this game is going to sell, you should wait until then before you start bragging.

i doubt metaphor has sold 3 million copies yet either
