What mental illness was she suffering from?
I hope she R.I.P. but this is exactly why I don't like all of this color this, lightskin this bullshyt that does absolutely nothing at addressing self cc esteem. It basically reinforces the idea that black is ugly, been that way and you have to love it DESPITE how ugly being black is. If you qant something to be beautiful and accepted you have to FIGHT for your respect. Being tanned wasn't a cultural beauty mark and was an indicator of a peasant woman but now pastey women are seen as freaks of nature who should be shoved in a tanning booth

You do realize that many blacks committed suicide throughout the centuries right? During the middle passage, slavery, and the Nadir, many blacks killed themselves and their families from psychological trauma of racial oppression and inhumane degradation. Maybe you can't relate because you are so far removed, but you need to respect the history and realize her story is actually very accurate to historical and contemporary trends of racial oppression.

As some have stated, depression and mental illness in general is very taboo amongst black people. I think its because black people have been belitted for so long based on contrived, manipulated ideas regarding the black psyche that black people tend to want nothing to do with any conversation regarding depression or anything that may make someone look crazy. Or less than mentally capable.
As black people, we have this "you have to be tough to be black" kinda thing that is bred into our thinking-both black men and black women. Its an off-shoot of black people having to be strong just to make it in the Western hemisphere, but it has no expiration date. The funny thing is, there is no safe place for us to turn it off.....not even amongst other black people. Blacks can't be human and have frailties without chastisement.
Black man:
- can't admit that its tough making it in a society never built for him outside of the servant construct cuz "you must be a broke a## n#gga....get your money up.....I got mine, get yours"
- can't admit that a chick may have actually hurt him cuz "these b#tches aint shyt....you actually loved a b#tch....you a lame...I'm a playa for life"
Black woman:
- can't miss daddy cuz "my mom did it all anyway....who needs a father....I turned out just fine....so will my son"
- can't need a man cuz "I'm strong and independent...I got my own.....having a man would be cool but I aint tryin though"
