I think Gibbs subject matter issue is that he reverts to extremely simple vocabulary and topics at times

Every rapper has cliche that they use to some extent, Gibbs version of that is super generic lol

He's written incredible verses and songs tho, it's just a minor critique I'd give him if you listen to a whole project of his

I still haven't heard a wack one

Gibbs is a fan of using alliteration and so am I

I have been listening to Gibbs since 09 and I can understand the critiques regarding his subject matter, but at the same time it's kind of a compliment. He raps so well that there's not much else you really could pick at. :yeshrug:

Picks great beats, is a virtuoso when it comes to flowing on various types of beats, more than competent as a technical rhymer, dope voice for rapping, aligned himself with producers who allowed him a chance at creating classics that he never would have had a chance making if he stayed on CTE. I don't think it can ever be overstated how effortlessly he raps and makes some difficult vocal performances seem pedestrian.

From that "murda on my mind" performance 15 years ago, I knew dude was gonna be a problem. Just too much talent and work ethic for it to not come together. You can see him dabbling in different lanes and sounds early in his career trying to get a footing and that ultimately helped him imo. He never went full curren$y with the weed talk songs, but he has his share of those, and it's something he doesn't do anymore. He always has just enough social awareness and recognition of the downsides of the street shyt that it doesn't come off too Thugnificent. He's gotten on tracks with legends and held his own. And he does it with a "greater than the sum of its parts" approach. He is never going to be an intricate and layered writer like KA or DOOM. Never will have the social insight of a Vince Staples/Killer Mike/Kendrick. Won't have the vocab of a Aesop Rock or Earl. I've always been curious to know if he could bring more of those aspects into his style, but chooses not to? I think if he did it would compromise other aspects of the entire package and it would amount to a net negative. Just my opinion.

^ Great post.
One of my favorite Gibbs tracks is Heaven Can Wait. He can get introspective when he wants to and does so effortlessly at times.

Another one is Anything To Survive. He talks about the other side of hustling. The stress, pain, and paranoia that comes with it. A lot of shyt that isn't talked about on albums.

Gibbs has this ability to adapt and mesh with so many producers, rappers, its crazy. The guy is truly talented and a gifted rapper. It comes to easy to him and he finds chemistry with just about anybody

Then he'll float on a guest verse on a track like this.

I didn't like Skinny Suge II as much as I fucc'd with the 1st one, but it was still nice. That I Still Love H.E.R. transition to Shangri La is fuego tho. Shyt smooth as hell.
