Honestly when he batted it out of the endzone I did kinda think "was he allowed to do that?" but at the same time I've never seen that being called before. And I seriously doubt anyone watching the game was yelling for a flag either. When you have to be told by ESPN to be outraged AFTER the fact there's a problem.

The old ass ref on ESPN said he thought it was right not to make the call and directly affect the outcome of the game

What... wtf? That's such a bad look for refs, basically admitting they will make calls on emotions rather than actual rules

It's obscure but it's not really subjective like a pass interference call a refund might 'miss'

Ref didn't 'miss' the call, he didn't even know it was a rule

What are you doing?

CJ can not get the benefit of fumbling the ball before going into the end zone

The general purpose of rule should supersede the letter of the rule EVERYTIME

I'm a Lions fan, I agree with that old ass ref, hahaha. The offense played like dogshyt the whole game. Who cares if it was tapped out, we deserved to lose. Now people are going to whine about this. This is not worthy of that kind of attention.

TYRONE GA!
Is this really that obscure of a rule? :patrice:

I guess I could see fans not knowing it, but refs have to know it, it shouldn't be even close to obscure for them.

Also, why is this called fumblegate? Why not batgate or some shyt? :patrice:

no excuse for the Refs not to know the rules when they are making 6 figures.

no excuse.

Refs are the 13th man I guess.... :skip:

Again, CJ didn't get the benefit of anything. He fumbled, and the play was correctly called a fumble. The issue is what happened when the ball was live. The rule is designed so that defensive players can't just easily give possession back to their offense. You have to at least try to obtain possession. It's equivalent to a player being credited for an interception even if he drops it because the QB made a bad throw. If doesn't matter what the offensive player did, we're looking at what the defensive player did in the wake of a bad play by the offense. Fumbles are notoriously difficult to recover, especially in a tight space like the endzone. Whose to say that the ball wouldn't have taken a wonky bounce and gone in the opposite direction if Wagner didn't bat it? That happens quite often.
