There are some exceptions of niche sports dominating in some countries though(yes because let’s be honest, every team sport outside /️ is niche. No sport touches the popularity of nfl in America and no other sport overseas is close to soccer’s popularity. Basketball/baseball/hockey are popular in America and in the other countries but compared to football and soccer they are niche. No offense. )

In my opinion, there are too much sports options out there for the sports fan. And so little time. So little free time. People are busy with their Kids, social life, school, job, etc. So you have to pick and choose. You can’t follow all the sports and all your teams with equal passion, emotional investment, time, energy, interest and intensity. Of course you can’t watch all the games of all your favorite teams.

Personally, I only have so much time and energy I'm willing to devote to being a hardcore fan to a team, where I pay attention and give a fukk regardless of team quality. I follow MLB/NHL/English Premier League too but honestly, only the NBA/NFL get that energy from me. Everyone else needs to show me.

Rugby isn't dominant in South Africa at all. South Africans excel at Rugby but the majority of people don't care for Rugby at all. Football (the actual foot to ball one) is the primary sport.

Rugby takes a backseat to Australian Rules Football in Australia as well in terms of general interest.
