Gary Payton on defense in today's era

"Basically everything," Payton replied, almost immediately. "It's no defense; it's just run and gun."

Payton really sounds era biased here and like a complete idiot. This is most definitely not a run and gun era. Let's compare the last full season (12-13) to the season in which Gary Payton went to the Finals as a member of the SuperSonics (95-96).

2012-13 opponents points per game: 98.1

1995-1996 opponents points per game: 99.5

2012-13 defensive rating: 105.9 dRtg

1995-1996 defensive rating: 107.6 dRtg

2012-13 Pace: 92

1995-1996 Pace: 91.8

So Mr. Payton this is a run and gun era when possessions are identical to the point in which you were in your prime the defense is a joke yet opponents FG% and opponents points per game are lower in this era than they were in your era.

You want to talk about elite 90's defenses, Bad Boy Pistons, 3-Peat Bulls, Ewing's Knicks, etc. yet the Indiana Pacers of this season are better statistically than all of those teams.

Indiana Pacers dRtg: 94.8
DRtg=defensive rating, points allowed per 100 possessions

Indiana Pacers opponents points per game: 87.9

Indiana Pacers opponents FG%: 40.9% FG

Indiana Pacers Pace: 92.5

Defensive Personnel: Roy Hibbert, David West, Paul George, Lance Stephenson, Ian Mahinmi, Danny Granger

This era has poor defenses yet the Celtics from 08-12 are one of the G.O.A.T. defenses, the Miami Heat from 11-13 were a historically good defense, Tom Thibodeau's Bulls team are one of the G.O.A.T. defenses.

Gary Payton on today's Point Guards

"To me, it's only three point guards in the NBA that impresses me," he said. "I got Chris Paul, [Rajon] Rondo and another kid that I like a lot, and I forgot his name right now. It's only really three—oh, and Tony Parker."

We don’t really have point guards in the NBA now," he explained, per Tom King of The Republican. "We really have (shooting) guards—and that’s a fact. I think there’s only three true point guards that play like point guards. I think Chris Paul is one, I think (Rajon) Rondo is one, and I think Tony Parker is the other."

First of all Point Guard is arguably at it's deepest, in today's NBA you see a solid PG just about every night. Really the fact that he forgot Tony Parker's name (the multiple time All-Star, 10+ year vet, potential future HoFer, and arguably the best player on last year's Finals runner-up the San Antonio Spurs) shows how much he really watches today's game.

I'd like to say Chris Paul since 08 is pretty much better than Payton ever was, Steph Curry is playing at a higher level offensively than Payton ever has, and is he trying to say Lillard, Irving, Deron Williams, Eric Bledsoe, John Wall, Goran Dragic, Ty Lawson, Derrick Rose, Kyle Lowry, Russell Westbrook among many others aren't good PG's? These guys can score and pass, Payton wasn't exactly a pass-first PG either he was big scoring guard.

Payton is era biased as hell and came off as a complete idiot, trying to big up the 90s when it is widely considered to be the weakest decade in NBA history :camby:

The G.O.A.T. era is the 80s :camby:

It's crazy how Payton didn't mention Curry (a 23 point, 10 assist PG) who balls in his city or Lillard (raised in his city and has seeked mentoring from him) as guys he liked at PG.

If you think you're lonely now, ohhh girl...
It's just nostalgia. People remember those triple headers on NBC on Sunday mornings coupled with the John Tesh theme, and it automatically evokes a ":wow:." It has to be better in every regard to this era, right? :ld:False, but confirmation bias is a motherfukker.

Oh and in regards to fouling.
Free throw attempts league average, the game was more physical (not more effective way of playing D) which led to more fouls it's a myth that NBA refs ate the whistle
2012-13 NBA 1818
1995-1996 NBA: 2164

did anyone actually watch the full video??? he's speaking some real talk. NBA is now SOFT. that's not even a secret!

I watched the video, the game is less physical but defense isn't any worse. Back then there were guys going to the lines 10-12 times a game too, have you seen Adrian Dantley play?

Gary Payton said it's a run and gun league, the amount of possessions are identical. He forgot Tony Parker's name and then called him a true point which is ridiculous he is obviously extremely out of touch with today's league.

I think a lot of us tend to overrate 90s NBA. Mostly because we grew up on it but personally I am not a fan of mid-late 90s NBA. People talk about the current era being predictable as well as their only being 4-5 legit contenders. But who was fukking with the Bulls by the late 90s? Jazz and pacers that's it.

The 90s are deified, any basketball historian knows the 90s is the weakest NBA decade in NBA history.

His point is that the fundamentals and physical play made the game better in the past. Today, even if it's not so-called banned, is a FLOP league. And the players today lack that kind of drive and heart that the older players back then had. He said EVERYTHING is wrong with the league, not just how they defend. Why else the entire East Conf. is so weak, and the West Conf isn't that far off. The NBA today is a shadow of its glory years. That's just an absolute fact.

The East this year is weak that is a fact although it's starting to get better. But to say the West isn't far off is ridiculous. The West from 2000 now is arguably the strongest conference in NBA history with multiple contenders every year. That BS about drive and heart is what it is absolute BS that era biased individuals have created. How have fundamentals at all decreased your just pulling things out the ass homie. Physicality has decreased but guys are playing more fundamental defense using their feet not their hands (handchecking), the defensive schemes are more elaborate than ever.
