Gary Payton on defense in today's era
"Basically everything," Payton replied, almost immediately. "It's no defense; it's just run and gun."
Payton really sounds era biased here and like a complete idiot. This is most definitely not a run and gun era. Let's compare the last full season (12-13) to the season in which Gary Payton went to the Finals as a member of the SuperSonics (95-96).
2012-13 opponents points per game: 98.1
1995-1996 opponents points per game: 99.5
2012-13 defensive rating: 105.9 dRtg
1995-1996 defensive rating: 107.6 dRtg
2012-13 Pace: 92
1995-1996 Pace: 91.8
So Mr. Payton this is a run and gun era when possessions are identical to the point in which you were in your prime the defense is a joke yet opponents FG% and opponents points per game are lower in this era than they were in your era.
You want to talk about elite 90's defenses, Bad Boy Pistons, 3-Peat Bulls, Ewing's Knicks, etc. yet the Indiana Pacers of this season are better statistically than all of those teams.
Indiana Pacers dRtg: 94.8
DRtg=defensive rating, points allowed per 100 possessions
Indiana Pacers opponents points per game: 87.9
Indiana Pacers opponents FG%: 40.9% FG
Indiana Pacers Pace: 92.5
Defensive Personnel: Roy Hibbert, David West, Paul George, Lance Stephenson, Ian Mahinmi, Danny Granger
This era has poor defenses yet the Celtics from 08-12 are one of the G.O.A.T. defenses, the Miami Heat from 11-13 were a historically good defense, Tom Thibodeau's Bulls team are one of the G.O.A.T. defenses.
Gary Payton on today's Point Guards
"To me, it's only three point guards in the NBA that impresses me," he said. "I got Chris Paul, [Rajon] Rondo and another kid that I like a lot, and I forgot his name right now. It's only really three—oh, and Tony Parker."
We don’t really have point guards in the NBA now," he explained, per Tom King of The Republican. "We really have (shooting) guards—and that’s a fact. I think there’s only three true point guards that play like point guards. I think Chris Paul is one, I think (Rajon) Rondo is one, and I think Tony Parker is the other."
First of all Point Guard is arguably at it's deepest, in today's NBA you see a solid PG just about every night. Really the fact that he forgot Tony Parker's name (the multiple time All-Star, 10+ year vet, potential future HoFer, and arguably the best player on last year's Finals runner-up the San Antonio Spurs) shows how much he really watches today's game.
I'd like to say Chris Paul since 08 is pretty much better than Payton ever was, Steph Curry is playing at a higher level offensively than Payton ever has, and is he trying to say Lillard, Irving, Deron Williams, Eric Bledsoe, John Wall, Goran Dragic, Ty Lawson, Derrick Rose, Kyle Lowry, Russell Westbrook among many others aren't good PG's? These guys can score and pass, Payton wasn't exactly a pass-first PG either he was big scoring guard.

." It has to be better in every regard to this era, right?
False, but confirmation bias is a motherfukker.
