biggies whole legacy comes from puffy and ny hip hop media campaigning on his behalf. "King Of NY" or "Best Rapper Alive" is just like any other political title like President or Governor. you need to campaign, you need to politic, you need to leverage media. the same sh!tsz camel and his media cronies do now, that same isht was going on with Big. The public didnt crown BIG. the industry did. just shows you the politics of the music business.

damn, if you read hip hop media outside of NY, Big wasnt even that respected. and he wasnt even that respected after he died. he was still gettiing sh!tted on. ny media plus revisionist hipsters, thats who crowned Big.

If this is true, why was he NEVER AND I DO MEAN NEVER THAT nikka EVER. came from a clique that went multi plat and has made great music 20 yrs straight? then what's the problem? nikkas need to stop making excuses as to why their favorite bum ass rapper cant cut the mustard. Truth is his flow aint shyt. He just an alright rapper with alright music.

So if that's what it takes to be the best.

It's just easier if you say you don't like Ghostface because I never said all his music was great. Further more being at the top of the game doesn't make you one of the best, AZ was never at the top of the game and people put him in the top 10, Redman has been up and down commercially but is still respected as an arguable top 10 rapper, I mean Prodigy was never that successful outside of NY and people put him in the top 15 or so. Dude has been a consistent figure in the game and is still relevant, unlike many of the aforementioned rappers who are dead or have just fallen so far off. Also of all the rappers in the multi-plat clique you speak he, Rae and Rza are the only ones making moves like that today.

Name a Mult-platinum Eastcoast album while Dre and Snoop where out? No Eastcoast LP went Multi-platinum during that time cause RTD was the 1st. As for RIAA certs, it's not like today. They were on top of those certs back then quick cause they wanted to promote when an album was a success. I've had time to research this from 92- before Ready To Die dropped. Here are the Eastcoast Sales:

92' EMPD - Business never personal - Gold
92' Das Efx Dead Serious - Platinum
92' Redman - What thee Album - Gold
93' Naughty By Nature 19 Naughty III - Gold (Eventually Platinum)
93' Onyx Bacdafucup - Platinum
93' Queen Latifah - Black Reign - Gold
93' Wu Tang Enter The 36 Chambers - Gold (Platinum by 95)
93' Digable Planets - Reaching - Gold
93' Tribe called Qwest - Midnight Muraders - Gold (Platinum by 96)
94' Redman Dare iz a Darkside - Gold

So again where are the Multi-Platinum albums like Snoop, Dre and Warren? I never said the East wasn't selling, I said they weren't moving Death Row/West Coast units and they weren't. Most of these were group albums. Like I said as you can see quality wasn't the issue, The East was dropping Classics left and right but they weren't moving the same units as the West. Until Biggie kicked in the door. The only album that was as Big as Dre's as far as going Multi-Platinum in the Early 90's was Arrested Developement and they were southern not Eastcoast. The Biggest albums of 94 were Biggie, Warren G, Da Brat, Bone, Meth and Beastie Boys as far as sales.

Another strong factual post from you. :salute:

I wish you would have put the dates when these albums were certified gold. If an album released in 93 is certified gold in 94 - that means it didn't go multi plat in a year and wasn't recognized as such b/c the record label never requested certification.

Then why were they hating?

Let's not forget that Cube and Cypress Hill were also moving units at this time.

Its also really unfair to try and theorize about what would have happened if BIG wasn't around - who knows? Who cares - fact is - he was the most prominent artist on the East at the time that the East came back. Probably can't give him all the credit - but he deserves the lions share.

Breh, what part of "RIAA cert dates are meaningless" do you not understand? You keep quoting "xyz album went plat by this year" obviously not understanding it has no bearing on what the album actually sold in that time frame.

The cert is given when it is paid for and requested by the label. Not when it actually sells that amount. They don't even audit or track the sales until the service is paid for. It says that right on the RIAA site.

That's the way it's always been, more or less since the RIAA's inception.

Fred.

But if an album is certified gold a year after its release - that is conclusive proof that it wasn't multi plat in that time frame.

Ok, you wanna talk about peers...I know more Kanye verses by heart than I do Beanie Sigel verses. Don't make him better. Like I said, you mentioning who's verses you remember more don't mean shyt in this debate and you sound stupid for even posting that shyt.

Also, you're just showing your bias by bringing up unproven ghostwriting bullshyt. I never heard a Perb verse as masterful as ANYTHING Ghost wrote after he seperated himself from Perb. You bringing Perb up shows you don't know shyt about Ghost material and should stay idle during this debate.

I think there is relevance to penning a verse that the majority of the hip-hop community can recite word for word. Busta's verse on Scenario is a prime example.

Course you have a point as well as the more simple the verse the easier it is to remember. Ghost was more abstract at times which makes his verses more difficult to remember.

well i wouldn't say it doesn't make sense, exactly, but more like the bolded

and even still, he doesn't have any true, stand out type verses, imo...same with rae..they got classic songs, but i can't recall being wowed by anything they ever spit..inspectah deck's "triumph" verse is more memorable then anything ghost ever spit

This is a fair criticism of Rae - but not Ghost. Ghost has bodied records.

None of these nikkas you named is considered top 10 outside of the east coast. Az is a dope lyrical nikka but he dont know what he doing and his delivery is lackluster. nikkas keep making excuses. You east coast nikkas or east coast bias thinking nikkas are living in an illusion. Nobody cares are about prodigy,az,redman or ghost face like that. I'm Cin,oh Born and raised. Very non bias place where all forms of hiphop got bumped. nikkas i just named were never anybody out here. Not saying they didnt make good music. I love the infamous. But all that top 10-15 talk.... nikkas aint on them like that. Never was. You have no clue how many rappers from other areas was poppin more than these nikkas you jocking. And i dont just mean commercially. I mean in these streets,i mean in nikkas walkmans,Blaring out of cars, apt windows etc. East coast is a very hater place that had ya'll thinking shyt was different than it actually was. It took puff's non hater approach to bring nikkas back.
Aint nobody ever in life stepped to me asking if i heard that new ghost, that new redman, that new az EVER!
If them nikkas got it they need to show it.
nikkas ALWAYS wanna make threads to bump up their favorite bumm ass rappers, that didint have the talent to leave a great mark on this art called hiphop. Ghost had a major deal, came out a popular clique. Shoulda made better decisions. nikka biggie been dead 16 years and in that time frame ghost has not made his name a household name. It's his fault ,same for the rest of them nikkas.

i refuse to conform
Truth be told. There's at least 15 rappers who were/is better than Biggie.

Yo bytch I fukked your friend, yeah you stank hoe
I seen her on the elevator, honey grabbed my Kangol
She put me on to mega-shyt, bout to slap the bytch
She shot crazy verbal, I leaned back like I'm rich
It took place late night on February 17th
Hands flooded like ink my face on her magazine
Just got back from Honolulu, pockets stackin boucoup cash
Girlfriend sipped the Yoohoo and laughed, yo
While I was on tour, whore, you went to work

ghostface is iller then biggie lyrically.

There was some grown man discussion on here before it descended to the usual bickering and name calling.

Ghost vs BIG? Good discussion point but too close to call. I enjoy both of their music pretty much equally.
