I thought the reason was that JJ Evans became very popular and John Amos believed it was buffoonery and was pushing the show into stupid places. So he started complaining so they got rid of him.

Watching the documentary. They said writers had scripts of Black empowerment. And that they didn't want to give the lines to John Amos because he was a strong black man and instead wanted to give the pro black lines to the little boy Micheal cause "America would be able to digest it better"
