Ain't nothing wrong with trying. This what they "risk"ing though. WWE not poppin the way diehard wrestling fans and the WWE want you to believe. They have their very, very, very, strong 'universe' and it's all they need. But when they branch out this is the result they will get until they possibly catch a mainstream wave again. So if Rollin Loud wasnt the new shyt they need to try, then what is the new shyt they need to try?
WWE is the equivalent of YouTube celebrities. On the internet, a YouTube "influencer" can be huge. But in mainstream, he's just a regular joe like the rest of us. But long as that influencer has their millions of fans on the internet that's all they need to cater to.
And it benefits WWE a ton many times because nobody ever really cares like that when they do stuff that would get other major leagues in hot water like still give a push to a guy who just got his 4th DUI or have connections to the Trump administration.
in a non pandemic setting, having that match happen in front of a sea of casuals was doomed. I mentioned this in the SD live chat but any combo or whatever of the likes of John Cena, Jeff Hardy, the Mysterios, Edge, Randy Orton, New Day, Usos, etc would’ve gone over better because those guys either already have an overlap with people who might be there recognition wise or they can work a match that’ll catch eyes that normally wouldn’t gaf.
Throw 4 wrestlers nobody knows in front of a festival audience.

Why wasn't Sasha thrown in? She's the only one on the roster who comes to mind with some star power.
