I read a lot of shyt today, and the general consensus online, believe it or not (various polls / articles / yahoo answers) is that Wayne Gretzky was the most dominant athlete of ALL TIME, even FAR ahead of Jordan in some people's minds....


When reading some of the ridiculous records and achievements Gretzky has, I actually was reluctantly beginning to agree.... But something just didn't feel right, so I started doing some research and...

Bottom line, in a Nutshell:

Gretzky - 4 Championships in 20 seasons (average .2 a season)
Jordan - 6 Championships in 15 seasons (average .4 a season, DOUBLE Gretzky's) (many will argue could have been 8 in 17, or 8 in 15 if you take away the wizards years... but I'm not even going there...)


Gretzky - 4-2 record in the Championship round
Jordan - 6-0 record in the championship round


Gretzky - 2 Playoff MVPS (The NHL does entire playoffs, not just Championship round, for MVP)
Jordan - 6 Playoff MVPS (Jordan has 6 Finals MVPs... But if you look at his Playoff PER for each of those Championship seasons, he has the highest PER (for the entire playoffs) of any player on the remaining 2 teams, all 6 times... So basically, if the NBA did it like the NHL and gave the MVP trophy to the best player of the playoffs and not just Finals, Jordan STILL woulda won it 6 times)



Most Playoff MVPs in NHL History: Patrick Roy 3 ... Wayne Gretzky 2 (and tied with several others)


Most NBA Finals MVPs in NBA History: Michael Jordan 6 ..... Several others tied with 3





Conclusion: In the end, I knew something didn't just feel right with the POPULAR opinion being Gretzky was more Dominant than Jordan, and now I see why....


Regular Season? Gretzky >>> Jordan (probably)... And this is what most people were going off.

Playoffs? Jordan's Game elevated, Gretzky's game dipped.... Jordan turned into a God, Gretzky turned human.


With the 4 stats I posted above... It's not even close. Just even MORE of a testament to how great Jordan was, even more so than I ever thought.

But Gretzky is 4-2 in the finals.... He only won Playoff MVP 2 times out of 6!


Hockey has had several people win MVP on the LOSING team in the Finals (unlike NBA, where it only happened ONCE in history, Jerry West)


Bottom line, if Gretzky was as good as Jordan, he should have 6 playoff MVPs for the 6 Finals he appeared in, EVEN IN THE 2 LOSSES....


He only has 2... Jordan has 6.... He is not on Jordan's level... period.

Howe isn't better and you won't find many people saying so.

Orr is a better comparison. Injuries cut his career short. But still, most go with Gretzky. Especially people under 50.

All I see is hockey cacs trying to validate their game by picking on the NBA (again). It's no surprise that very few people like both sports. They're like complete opposites in almost every way (culturally, socially, etc).
Every now and then you see articles trying to hype up the NHL by selectively comparing it to the NBA, despite the dismal ratings and low popularity.
Gretzky was great but his contribution on growing his sport was minimal at best. Hockey was and remains a niche sport outside Canada and some Scandinavian countries, so that plays against him (same goes for GOAT athletes in other smaller sports).
Jordan's overall impact on and off the court far surpasses him

As far as being great compared to the rest of your peers. I think Gretsky was better than Michael Jordan was to the NBA. There is a reason why the #99 was retired league wide. Hockey calculates points with goals and assists. This is probably one of the sickest stats you'll ever hear. You can take away Gretsky's goal total for his career and just have his assists, and he'd still be the leading point getter in NHL history. That is fukking amazing and you can't deny that.

Gretzky had more assists (1,963) than Mark Messier, the 2nd leading pt getter in NHL history has total pts (1,887) in 5 less seasons. Gordie Howe played 33 seasons and finished with 1,850 total pts. Gretzky had 4 seasons with over 200 points and 2,857 total pts in his career, almost 1000 more than Messier and over 1000 more than Howe. That's why just about everyone considers him the GOAT in hockey, except maybe some old bitter people who say he was protected, and the most dominant athlete ever. Can't really compare Gretzky and Jordan but it's hard to argue against that.

I always say Gretzky is the only athlete who is hands down the GOAT in his sport, though most people say Jordan is, there's strong arguments for Wilt, Russel, Kareem etc. There's not much of an argument for any other hockey player.
