Gretzky had more assists (1,963) than Mark Messier, the 2nd leading pt getter in NHL history has total pts (1,887) in 5 less seasons. Gordie Howe played 33 seasons and finished with 1,850 total pts. Gretzky had 4 seasons with over 200 points and 2,857 total pts in his career, almost 1000 more than Messier and over 1000 more than Howe. That's why just about everyone considers him the GOAT in hockey, except maybe some old bitter people who say he was protected, and the most dominant athlete ever. Can't really compare Gretzky and Jordan but it's hard to argue against that.
He clearly outperformed all other great hockey players, no doubt about it. Old heads always have that "back in my days" shyt (in all sports).
Gretzky's biggest problem in my opinion was his relative lack of charisma. But there's no question about his dominance.

Gretzky is undisputed goat (career wise) but without injuries Orr and Lemieux are right there. Both had peaks right up there with Gretzky. Lemieux could of had the single season point record but got cancer in 93. Orr, I never watched play but his numbers are crazy for a defenseman. A lot of older people like Don Cherry say he's the best ever, in his prime.

Yea I never liked Gretzky, I never linked it to his lack of charisma before but now that you say it that definitely could've been at least part of the reason I never gravitated towards him as a kid. Can't take away his greatness though..that mind state helps me appreciate sports so much more now than when I used to let my biases come into play.

Charisma plays a HUGE role in sports. Always has, always will.
It's like good looks in dating.

The other great thing about Gretzky he was literally 6 feet 1 165lbs. He was considered to small to play and dominate
.

Gretzky to me would still put up 70 points right now even at age 50.

Lemieux in 92-93 though had 69 goals in 60 games before his season ended :wow:

In the early 90s the nhl was more popular than the NBA in America you can thank Gretzky for that. The lockout killed it though

But Gretzky caused expansion down south

All I see is hockey cacs trying to validate their game by picking on the NBA (again). It's no surprise that very few people like both sports. They're like complete opposites in almost every way (culturally, socially, etc).
Every now and then you see articles trying to hype up the NHL by selectively comparing it to the NBA, despite the dismal ratings and low popularity.
Gretzky was great but his contribution on growing his sport was minimal at best. Hockey was and remains a niche sport outside Canada and some Scandinavian countries, so that plays against him (same goes for GOAT athletes in other smaller sports).
Jordan's overall impact on and off the court far surpasses him:yeshrug:

Is it fair to slate the Gretzky era as too favorable for offenses? His numbers were still far ahead of his contemporaries.
The same thing is happening in the NFL now with QBs putting up ridiculous numbers after rule changes.

When exactly? In terms of what? TV ratings? Sales? Overall coverage? Worldwide attention?
The NBA became a world powerhouse after the Dream Team crushed the buildings in 1992. The NHL never got close.

Both basically did the same thing. Expanded the sport into other countries, broke records and were dominant. Hockey can never be as marketable as basketball though. Nobody just walks around wearing hockey jersey's, you don't wear skates, hockey pants, shin pads etc. anywhere other than a hockey rink. In basketball you can market jersey's which can be worn on more occasions than a hockey jersey and shoes which can be worn anywhere, shorts which can be worn anywhere almost.
