Assuming most of you guys are in your 20's the majority of you guys missed Wayne Gretzky's prime. First off winning Stanley Cups in hockey is way harder than winning NBA championships. What even more impressive is winning it 3/4 years, in a sport where Stanley cup winners don't even make the playoffs the following year. Dude made hockey the most popular it's ever been or will likely ever be. Dude had cats in the hood who knew dikk about hockey wearing hockey jerseys just because. Jordan will forever be the player du jour as basketball is concerned but yes in relative to the sport Wayne was the more dominant player.

That was strictly cuz of fashion, tho, not cuz of Gretsky's greatness.

Gretsky is only greater than Jordan if you grade Gretsky on a lesser scale taking into account hockey is a lesser sport (with all this relative to his sport stuff). In that sense, Michael Phelps >>> Michael Jordan.

On a global scale (and I'm not just talking worldwide, global in the sense of an equal scale), however, MJ >>>> Gretzky

Because the best team doesn't always win.

Example two years ago the LA kings were the 8th seed and they won the Stanley cup.

All it takes is a hot goalie and you can ride that all the way. The last NHL team to repeat as Stanley Cup champs was in 97/98.

To win the cup you have to have a good four lines, a good power play a good penalty kill, a good goalie

can you explain this position? They both play 4rounds and 7 game series to win

It's what is making the Blackhawks recent string of dominance impressive.

jordan was closer to his peers, but his overall impact on the sport is bigger than gretzkys does that make sense?

so yeah, gretzy was probably more dominant, which is crazy considering how dominant jordan was

Only reason its a debate is cuz Gretzky moved to LA in his prime to a bum ass team...Had he stayed with the Oilers another 6 seasons with that juggernaut..theres no debate that Gretzky would have been the unanimous GOAT....

Wayne having that 92 goal season (100 goals including playoffs) at 21 and a 215 point season (163 assists) is just :wow: :wow: :wow:

Completely different era in the sport, but those scoring records are untouchable...nobody will ever come close to a 200 pt season ever again in todays game...

Wayne Gretzky at 37 had 90 points.

Wayne Gretzky in his last. Year in the clutch and grab NHL at 38 had 60 points in 70 games.

I Still don't know how he did it. Dude was weak as

All I see is hockey cacs trying to validate their game by picking on the NBA (again). It's no surprise that very few people like both sports. They're like complete opposites in almost every way (culturally, socially, etc).
Every now and then you see articles trying to hype up the NHL by selectively comparing it to the NBA, despite the dismal ratings and low popularity.
Gretzky was great but his contribution on growing his sport was minimal at best. Hockey was and remains a niche sport outside Canada and some Scandinavian countries, so that plays against him (same goes for GOAT athletes in other smaller sports).
Jordan's overall impact on and off the court far surpasses him:yeshrug:
Stop reading those internet warriors. Many people like both including me. Those internet cacs are bitter and jealous. They're also following because they watch the NFL, where many players went to the same colleges as NBA players, because everyone else does. Most NBA arenas are full of cacs and you can't say at least some of them don't like hockey.
