Has anyone credible in hip hop EVER gone on record to rank Takeover above Ether?

Huh? Its no blueprint. We know he did. We know Pac did.

This battle would be talked about way more if both werent dead. No one really wants to disrepect the dead, so breaking the beef down now is not as thrling. But when that shyt was popping it was crazy.
The general narrative is "Pac dissed Biggie...Biggie didn't respond".

You have long kiss Goodnight but Puff said it wasn't about Pac...Cease said it was. Biggie performed it after Pac died and judging from the reference to his car accident had to have recorded and written it after Pac died.

When Pac was alive Biggie constantly said he refused to partake in the battle. He even told Junior Mafia not to respond. Even Jay said he was trying to get Big to ride.

way too many people are quick to pick Takeover over Ether when asked about it if you want to keep it a buck.

you know Ether did damage in that building when Cam said "you got no Ether for me b ?"
after Ether dropped Dame never spoke to Hov for days..you bet he was slaughtering him to Cam and them.

i'm past caring at this point, i just say i fukks with SuperUgly hard.

In the rap following Juelz said "no ether can destroy me I'm here for real" to close the verse as well.

Yeah, he should have left it alone.

Theres definitely some facts in the verse but it doesn't really matter. Nas' career was looking weak at that time, all Jay needed to do was call him on it. And he had better sounding raps with better production.

The beat on Ether is immediately a fail, whereas Takeover still sounds good.

Didn't matter if the Takeover beat was considered better than Ether's beat. Ether hurt Jay bad. Jay thought he was God at that time and Ether brought him down...WAY down. Jay was so hurt he made a whole album basically crying about why he shoulda won.

Also...please name the facts in Takeover about Nas. I'll respond back with the facts about Jay in Ether.

This whole "Ether was filled with just corny jokes shyt and Takeover was all facts" shyt gotta stop. Not even close to truth.

I don't know, that he fukked his wife. Besides that I guess it comes down to opinion, Nas was putting out weak music at the time and even made a shyt Big Pimpin' clone with Oochie Wally. Jay just trashed him like a fan would, and I like many others happened to agree with his take. I'm looking at the Ether lyrics now, Gay-Z and Cockafella? This is grade school stuff. Your whole record label gunned up and clapped? Who cares. In the end it just comes down to opinion. Nas sounds desperate, Jay sounds confident. Jay fukked it up with the return shots but it is what it is.

Neither Jay or Nas have really hurt from this moment anyway, we're still discussing it lol, and they're still legendary rappers.

takeover was super wack, especially if you were a doors fan

beat was awkward trash ... the lameee shyt was the definition of what he was mocking

whole song sounded like juelzing especially knowing that Jayz was stalking Nas
and asking about how big his dikk was

lowkey that year for Jay was the most cringeworthy of his whole aura

He didn't fukk his wife. He fukked his daughter's mother...when him and her weren't together as a couple. And they were never married. Calculated inaccuracy in Jay's account just to clown Nas. And regardless of how weak you may think Nas' work was at that time he still was selling records heavy. He had two albums go platinum in 1999 and both debuted on the charts very high. So Jay saying Nas went from "Top 10 to not mentioned at all" is a God damn lie.

Also, Jay clowning Nas for making Oochie Wally is the biggest fukking joke in the Takeover track since Jay had made several corny ass trying to crossover, sellout club tracks up to that point. Remember "I Know What Girls Like", "Sunshine", "Things That You Do" or "Snoopy Track" ? :russ:

Oochie Wally was miles better than all of those...let's be real :russ:

That song still plays on radio and clubs and new artists still sample it and try to redo it.

And the adolescent namecalling? Why do Jay stans conveniently forget Jay calling Nas a faq, trash, and a lame in Takeover. "Escos trash"..."faq model"..."you a lame"....stop it. Jay was doing the same childish namecalling as Nas, but he actually initiated it. Why is it desperate and "grade school stuff" when Nas does it but confident and truth telling when Jay does it? Again...stop it.

When Nas said "gunned up and clapped quick" he couldn't have been more accurate. Look what happened in the aftermath of Ether:

- Jay called up the biggest hip hop radio station in the country and was weeping on air.
- Bleek and Dame both admitted that when Ether dropped it was one of the worst days of the record labels history.
- Jay made a whole fukking corny ass album basically crying that he lost to Nas.

"Gunned up and clapped quick" couldn't be more accurate. That's exactly what Nas did to Jay and the Roc. The word Ether is now used to describe bodying an opponent now. Everywhere. Not only in Hip Hop music.

"I don't kill soloist, I only kill squads" :ahh:

I mean fine, but Ether sounds corny to me. It just does. I already said I don't think Nas' disses to Jay are impressive, and I agree with Jay's analysis of Nas' career at that point. Jay was the most popular rapper around and Nas was nowhere near him. We're not going to agree here, I don't like the Ether record very much.

You can make a case that Jay's is corny too but part of it was just laying bait for Nas.

I lived it. Takeover was better. But Ether did win Nas the battle.

Exactly how I feel. In the moment I thought NaS snatched Jay’s soul with Ether. Really wasn’t trying to listen to anyone who thought otherwise.

Listening now though? Takeover is the better diss. NaS was talking shyt. Jay was talking facts (even though I disagree with IWW being “enhhhhh”), and broke him the fukk down.

IMO, part of the reason Ether was so monstrous upon release is in large part due to where Takeover left NaS career-wise, prior to his response. That joint would’ve ended a lot of careers, and it’s a credit to Esco that he came back and actually won the battle.

But yeah, Ether ain’t fukking with Takeover. Not sure why people are acting like it’s blasphemous to say as much, but that’s the fukking coli for you. :yeshrug:

Ok, fine...you like Takeover better. But don't try to act like it's some confident work full of truths and Nas' track is some desperate rebuttal full of childish namecalling and lies. Just say you like Takeover better as a song and keep it moving. All that unnecessary dikklicking lying is unnecessary and easy to debunk.

I gotta cut you off right there because that's completely irrelevant. I actually prefer "Take Over" but that's a non-factor when you look at how the songs actually affected their intended targets. "Ether" had Jay on the radio sounding like his mom died.

And the song is legendary enough that ether has turned into a verb in hip-hop. Nobody has ever said "don't make me take over you", because that song clearly didn't do what it was supposed to. "Ether" did. The end.

Fred.
