Movement and feel of UT99 ...with the scope of UT2004.
Great blend of both worlds in my opinion

Only thing I wish they had done was keep all the game modes like assault and bombing run from earlier games....and the tournament mode in UT2004. Actually anyone who goes back and plays the single player mode in UT2004 will see what I think all online lobby & matching systems should be structured like. The single player mode in UT2004 should've been the permenat structure of the UT online lobby system from that point forward. It was the perfect blend of in game skill talked about by the OP and "modern day" progression in games.

The money earned in game wasn't used to buy game breaking perks that unbalanced the in game fighting dynamics. The money was made to buy your way into matches, wager on teammates, buy/pay teammates, enter contest, etc. I.E. you can be constantly working towards something in terms of meta goals while not doing so in a way that throws off the skill based aspects ...which is what came about with Modern Warfare 2.

its crazy that halo actually is closer to what i'm talking about but it was the most broken FPS ever when it dropped :heh:....word to the pistol with the powers of a sniper rifle WITH a scope

The H1 pistol is one of the greatest weapons in fps history. It's the best utility weapon in halo history because of its range and how much skill it took to use it. Only a few ppl have mastered it, it's not as simple or easy as you put it. The gun can kill in 3 shots to the head and the best players alive can only pull it off about 45% of the time.

But to answer your question, there hasn't really been too many fps games based on skill in the last 10 years. The only one that comes to mind is Nexuis..it's an arcade game on xbl. It's a fast paced arena shooter that resembles quake. It also has no auto aim (with the ability to turn it on if you wish).

fukk COD

Halo 5 brought back a Halo 1 trick I didn't even know existed. Blowing up weapons across the map to retrieve them.

Not my prob....I've been around UT long enough to know people were throwing all kinds of shade at UT200(3/4) also in terms of everything from
....superficial things like character design "mr. crow" :francis:
....to movement / level design (the wall & double jumps bringing a need for huge/scaled levels some people didn't like)
....Issues with the shield gun throwing off matches
etc etc

UT3 didn't kill anything in my opinion, it simply furthered the same things that was going on in the community anyway
I.E. people with a vested interest in their fav version shytting on the other ones

It's mediocre in h5 and no one really does it. You'll see some cool shyt every now n they like that clip, but that's about it. The fact that it only works with with sticky grenades too makes it way different from halo 1 where stickies and drag grenades can be used, with the latter being the main tool to nade shyt to yourself

It's a necessary tool in h1 because everyone that understands how to play the game uses grenade tricks to acquire stuff.

Won the game off a nade trick to get snipe.

Halo 1 still took a lot of skill and so did Halo after they dwarfed the pistol power and grenade throw range and narrowed the field of vision. Played and beat all the Halos on Legendary, don't own a Xbox one so can't comment on that.

Starcraft 2 is not a FPS..

OH actually i take that back. REFLEX. It was made by members of the quake3 cpma community and it has old school gameplay with new graphics:

Unfortunately, i think todays generation is a little too retarded to actually play a skilled fps, they'd rather stroke each other off behind crates in CS:GO. :wow:

The answer to this thread is the HALO series for now.

Not really my cup of tea, but I think that's the only one that qualifies in recent memory.

stand by your position but I used to play this on 360 all the time and it did not take any skill at all... fun to play? yes.... skillful? no...but maybe it was different on PC

:yeshrug: not my ...or the games fault xbox didn't have players worthy of putting effort to fight.:ehh:
That's like me saying Street Fighter "did not take any skill at all... fun to play? yes.... skillful? no" because of the scrubs that I use to play against down the street from me when I was growing up.

It's depressing as fukk how the industry has changed. Today's gamers will never give games like these a chance. But will keep buying Call of Duty though.

I've been playing these arena shooters since my daddy came home from the galleria with a shareware version of wolfenstien for our Packard bell PC. That was way back when mofos was playing police/kings quest, myst, and shyt.:wow:

That said the thing with arena shooters is they need to add something to cover up the monotony. The gameplay mechanics can be top notch but doing DM & CTF over and over for no obvious reason or gain :francis: They need some kind of meta game layer that sits over the combat.

1. World conquest mode
2. Tournament mode
3. Sudo story / persistent world
4. etc etc
They need something for players to work towards or they can easily get caught up in the monotony of sameness.:jbhmm: .........thats all I got :hubie:
