I mean...

Just... :patrice:
I actually have this issue.

Personally the fact that the Wu-tang brand/logo is so popular just proves that their legacy is set in stone. Wu-Tang fans cross all types of lines, race, religion, gender, etc...It's one of those quintessential elements of American culture like Coca-Cola or Stussy. Seth Rogen is a Wu-Tang fan and said this in many interviews. What's wrong with that? It seems like you got an issue with it and them or something.

Most people would kill for that type of success honestly. The fact that a group of 9 black men from the hoods of New York managed to make it in this world and contribute to it something that people all across the world mess with should be applauded.

I have that issue back at my Mom's basement. I remember how... uh... mehhhhhh it was when reading it. I dunno how to describe it.

Hmmm... I guess it's kinda like Mike Tyson.

I vaguely remember Iron Mike Tyson. Hell, I remember my dad hosting parties to watch Iron Mike fight. The whole house would go NUTS! My dad's friends would be in a frenzy when he'd come out. Hell, even when he was in the news it was a big deal. But now, when I see Mascot Mike Tyson running around in the media, doing that dumb Hangover nonsense it just feels... meh. I mean, I know it's good for him, better for his mental state, and it puts money in his pocket, but I dunno... Mascot Mike just feels so... *shudders* tamed. When I see dude I give him props for getting his, but it just feels bad seeing what he is from what he was and his place in society currently.

I guess it would be like seeing Sitting Bull on the exhibition circuit after losing the Lakota wars. Sure he's making some bread that he gives back to the poor but man, that's a god damned legend.

The fact that Shame on a Nikka was essentially the theme song for TWO big hollywood movies, Man with the Iron Fists and Knocked up, a kung fu flick and a Judd Apatow comedy, says all that needs to be said about the Wu and their legacy in pop culture

If it weren't for Wu-Wear there would be no rapper clothing lines. No Sean John, no Rocawear, no FUBU, no Akoo, no Vampire Life, none of that.

Remember the PS1 fighting game they had? If it weren't for that, there would be no Def Jam Vendetta or any of that.

Okay, cool.

This brings me back to my Bob Seager point:

Great song... about Chevy Trucks.

I love the Geto Boys.

I love that song "Damn it feels good to be a Gangster" I love "Die Motherfvcker."

But you know, those songs don't hit as hard as it should and probably once did because it's about goofy cubicle jockeys destroying outdated office equipment.*

Sure, sure, you can say it's great that the song lives on, but as what? Some ironic sight gag?

That's all I'm saying about WuTang's merch. It doesn't feel like it's about repping the Wu. It feels like it's about something way different than that at least when I encounter it.

*Just for the record I like Office Space and I'm a huge fan of Mike Judge's work.

I see where you're coming from but for me it doesn't soften the music at all or their legacy. They are etched in pop culture like run dmc or nirvana or zeppelin or the who or Hendrix. But unless you or I have the same powers as the shadow or professor x, we don't know why someone is rocking the w, whether to be ironic or because they're fans

I feel you. But even when they are fans it's often from this really elitist point of view that just rubs me the wrong way. It just usually isn't a good experience engaging people that rock WuTang merch. I dunno. Things may be different elsewhere, but that's just what I've experienced. If it were nothing but big titted Instagram models rocking their gear then we wouldn't be having this discussion, but usually it's some pencil necked geek or some unwashed "Williamsburg" neckbeard that just can't wait to tell you how much better his taste in rap is than yours.

Not gonna lie....as someone who is well old enough to remember the first coming of Wu-Tang........this second coming slash merchandise explosion of late feels weird as fukk. I am more than happy for those brothers though. They are in a very select class of artists in a genre with more casualties than any other.

It feels awkward considering Wu were hella gully when they came out, & now there's Rocksmith branded Wu merchandise in tons of stores, including Hot Topic where Scene girls shop.
