the instructor, who is a Black male, outlined a dress code for students to follow, which stated that “hoodies,” “bonnets,” “durags,” “coochie cutter shorts,” and “twerk shorts” — among other clothing items — were not allowed to be worn in class. Many quickly took to Twitter in outrage, claiming that the dress code was anti-Black, especially concerning the restriction of durags and hoodies.

I'm offended that bonnets and coochie cutter shorts are considered Black or pro-Black. Bonnets are for your house and coochie-cutter shorts are for the club or beach, IMO. Hoodies are just hoodies, there's nothing ethnic about them. Durags, I can see that as being a Black thing. And personally I don't think there's anything wrong with them.

When you tell some brothers and sisters they can't do something, they immediately pull out the anti black card.

Dresses, purses, tunics, and heels are not specific to a culture or demographic.

This guy chose specific words and items for a reason. Everyone knows what “business attire” is. There was no need for the short and very specific ban list.

Have you dealt with today's students? I'm being dead serious. Just a few years ago professors were levying complaints about the erosion they've seen in the general student body from a variety of topics spanning from writing skills to general behavior.

A whole mass of these kids / young adults today wouldn't know how to boil milk after being told to pour the milk in the pot and put the pot on the stove. You'd literally have to tell them to turn the stove on as well. Unless every minute detail is explained, the message gets lost. Intuition just isn't what it was. Students have become that fukkin dense for one reason or another.

And I absolutely see where you're coming from, I may be debating but you make a valid assumption. I'm just asking to consider another perspective as to why he had to be so detailed in his urgings. A lot of these young cats today need their hands held more than ever before.

If that’s the case he did a bad job. He’d have a whole bunch more stuff to list.

In reality he chose those specific terms for a reason. Just as easily could have said “no short shorts” which would have encompassed all of it. By listing out a select few he actually undermined his rule cause now I can just call my short shorts “Daisy Dukes” and since he didn’t list them, that should be fine right?

Im torn, cause hoodies are a normal part of college attire, on the other theres too many of us who hate when a black authority figure tries to set some standards, knowing they wouldnt have a problem following them in a white establishment

Lol college students are broke. Hoodies are a staple at any college, and have always been part of a college students lifestyle.
I don’t see the hoodies as an issue especially if they aren’t up during class but this ain’t true hoodies wasn’t even popular up until the 80s/90’s. In old pics you almost never see hoodies worn casually.

It's not the professor's job to set those standards. If the university didn't have a dress code than he's wrong for trying this.

You can read what his students say about him and he's just being strict for no reason. Stop defending this bozo.

White boys and other races are rocking durags too.

UNT even has a Durag Day

To kick off their Homecoming week, many of the University of North Texas‘ black student body participated in Durag Day — and yes it’s as ridiculous simple as it sounds. The premise? Wear your favorite durag or bonnet around campus.

We’re not entirely sure what the point was, other than to “come together” as a culture on a campus that’s primary white, but even I, as 30-something black woman rolled my eyes at the thought of us walking around with bonnets and durags on for fun. Especially when the President of the University, Neal Smatresk, decided to participate.
