They'll have to buy him out because it doesn't make sense to keep him without a show.
ESPN is where he belonged (off-camera) but he arrogantly thought he outgrew it

they didn't cancel the contract. He signed a production deal and they invested in his media network. He is still going to produce content for them. Before the Any Given Wednesday show, he produced a successful Game of Thrones recap show for them.

I understand he's under contract and trying to branch out with pop culture, but in the end he's just a sports guy.

Being he got known and made it by being a sports fan he should do a show about sports fans. The different cultures, superstitions, etc he could take it worldwide cause I think it'd be interesting to see the passion of the soccer fans in Europe or the cricket fans in India and at the end we realize we're all the same. He should start with the cubs. Then go to college football.

The format didn't play to his strengths.

Simmons is at his best in long podcasts (or long written columns) where he can do into very long, extended digressions and explore very specific issues or theories.

In a relatively short show with segments lasting only a few minutes, he just seemed all over the place and couldn't find a way to connect given the limitations.

Whenever I watched, I'd just end up thinking to myself "this is like one of his podcasts, if it got interrupted a few minutes in." There was nothing special that made them different from his podcasts, and they were worse due to their length.

As a fan of his writing and podcasts, I'm glad this shyt is done. It was awful, no way around it.

He's still got the HBO deal, so create something but hire someone who can actually host it

And get back to writing, and making more podcasts than the same 2 every week. He used to get some really dope guests for his pod, he hasn't a single podcast outside of the 2 NFL-based ones he does since September. Think of all the guests he got on the show, he'd have done so much better doing long pods with them where he's off camera, much more comfortable, and can actually have discussions. Instead we get those awkward 5-10 minutes on the show which are all over the place.

Yeah, his podcast has gotten pretty bad because for most of the time, the only three people he has on are Cousin Sal to guess the lines, and Lombardi and JackO (can't stand either of those two). I think he's grossly misunderstood how much people care about hearing him chat with his friends.

I'm not a Lombardi fan, but I do like JackO just because of their Yankees/Red Sox talk. The pods with House and JackO were best when it was once a month so they had a bunch to cover. When they're on at least once a week, its overkill.

The past 2 months, its literally only been Sal, Lombardi, House, and JackO. All those great pod guests he used to get now are all saved for the TV show, so hopefully with it cancelled he'll go back to more of those.

Bill Simmons problems are that he's a bad broadcaster, his writing fell off (he knows it and that's why he probably stopped) and most importantly I don't think he watches as much sports anymore.

After 9 years of podcasting he still chews, swallows and grunts on mic. He doesn't know how to prounce basic words like women or Wimbledon. Having friends come on was a good idea when they would get sprinkled in once in a while for few minutes but now they're the only people on. He not only reserved good guests for HBO show but also doesn't discuss certain topics indepth because that would step on the other shows on his Ringer podcast network.

Before it used to be Ric Bucher and Marc Stein talking NBA for couple of hours now he has Joe House. Used to have Malcom Gladwell, Chuck Klosterman and other people who would bring differing opinions and disagree with him regularly, now he has Joe House. Instead of talking politics with former Obama speechwriters he has Jacko (if you don't want to step on their podcast at least use their connects and knowledge to discuss topics from different angles).

When he announced The Ringer I noticed he said people are not interested in long form articles nor lengthy content. Now you see his website and 90% of it is forgettable garbage that has little to no content. And with Any Given Wednesday he took his podcast and chopped two or three dope guest he could have to fit them in really short interviews. He swung and missed badly by thinking that short = more appealing. The truth is that if it's good and interesting, people are gonna consume whatever it is no matter it's length.

I think it was on that interview were Bill basically said that the time off he had after ESPN fired him made him realize he didn't need to work as hard and he should enjoy life more (he made a comparison with someone but I can't recall who). That show has been made by a lot of channels. ESPN latino has one were they travel Europe and another one were they go to every south american country showing the biggest fanbases

He compared it to Brady and being forced to take the 4 game suspension and how he was afraid Brady would come back not nearly as hungry.
