You’re not kidding. 20 years ago my folks bought a 2700 square foot house with a pool in Orlando for $188,000. That house would cost double that today. How many people can afford that much? Up here I regularly see houses under 1500 square feet that still go over $500,000. 20 miles east to get out of the city and even 1800 square foot houses have $1200+ a month in property taxes. The average car probably cost 70% of what the average car costs today. People used to be able to buy a house large enough to raise a family in with the job they’d get after graduating high school. Now a bachelors and frequently a masters might not get you a job to support the rent on a one room apartment. Let’s not forget the country’s crumbling infrastructure or the environment. This isn’t sustainable. We’re the first generation in maybe 90-100 years to be worse off economically than the one before us. When the bill comes due, it’s gonna be ugly.
Imagine being a young married couple trying to buy a home in the dc area. :mjcry:

Imagine entering the workforce between 2005-14. :mjcry:

Imagine being stuck at a bullshyt job because of real economic anxiety and not being able to work in the industry you wanted. :mjcry:

That skill development is gone. That earning potential is gone.

A generation of people got fukked and it will get worse.

You think DC is bad, look at houses in NYC. Aside from what I listed, last year I saw a 950 square foot house in south queens near the belt parkway go for $315,000. No good jobs either. Without a masters or doctorate all you see on job sites are sales or front desk type jobs. Next to nothing unionized. You should see what it looks like in Orlando. Nothing but commission and sales or food service with some hospitality sprinkled in. Imagine how bad it must be getting in the Midwest and Deep South :heh: :picard:

What pisses me off is when people are like "just go move where the houses are cheap" :heh: but the houses are cheap because the pay is terrible, and the houses there are usually expensive for the salaries in the area. I could move to Jamestown NY and cop a house for 60k but what am I going to do to make money?

Texas and Midsized cities are the new wave. Birmingham, Columbus, Knoxville, etc...

People around the world with a lot less than your average America aren’t offing themselves in record numbers.

It’s deeper than economics.
people in other parts of the world don't define themselves with economic success like americans do, and have a more communal society. They have churches, neighborhoods, generations of family in the same house. In the US everyone spreads out chasing careers and has no support system.

This is why "just move" is always stupid advice.

Agreed, and the happiness promised from economic success is far from gaurenteed.

I knew since I was 10 that I had to fend for myself in the future.
If you are aged 27-36 right now, realize the world fukked us over royally and our lives are irrevocably ruined.

Imagine being in a such a sh_tty position that you have to consider joining the military to afford a middle class standard of living because nobody wants to give you a chance at gainful employment and then having a$$holes around you tell you that you're "not trying hard enough."

Then joining the military isn't a piece of cake like it use to be.

That's me right now...

Yup and we're going to be the ones who have to pay

:scust:

I'm paying 15k a year in payroll taxes. Which I don't mind for a well functioning system. This is not a well functioning system, and with the continuing sabotage it will only become worse.

The military is a great look, if you aren’t ready for/don’t plan on going to college
:yeshrug:

I can’t imagine slaving a low wage job($15/hr) when I can serve 4 yrs and slide into the middle class.
You might take to it, make a career of it and be good for life.
