It’s defintely a hip hop problem, and if it weren’t for Kendrick 2024/2025 would have been just as bad. Kendrick is gonna go back inside eventually then what? Hip Hop has never been just a space for the underground acts there has to be a mainstream balance
This is not a hiphop probLen. How many new artist are topping the charts these days from any genre?

and Kendrick just hit the perfect storm and connected with white millennial men who love a certain type of rap, Kendrick last album flopped commercially and in the culture

Im not even trying to shyt on Kendrick, but he’s not influence any sounds or styles of rap

I’ve been eating real good for years and still do :manny:hip hop is the most accessible it’s ever been top to bottom, and if you can’t find something you’re interested in, that just means you should move on to another genre. Now if all you listen to is Lil Baby, Durk, Drake, Young Thug, and Ice Spice, then yea, hip hop is dead and gone.

The worst thing that happened to Hip Hop is how it transitioned into a get rich quick scheme instead of an art form. Most Mainstream rap releases are bloated 25+ tracks releases, with phoned in performances and cookie cutter production. The game for most people now is use music as a stepping stone to social media stardom, and just cake money off of club appearances and sponsorships.

I miss that 2011-2013 era so much man. I know the demographic on here is older but most big rappers/groups had their unique sound are there were enough visible underground acts to keep shyt interesting. We had Odd Future, ASAP, Raider Klan, Pro Era, Flatbush Zombies and early TDE all out at the same time. It’s insane how much the artistry has been drained out of the culture.

Cool. So 3 40 year old rappers gotta hold it down in the mainstream until someone in their 20s emerges? It’s never been this lack of talent before

All were up next and they died. :manny:

Plus billboard changed the rules to make radio play more important. That made it harder for smaller artists to chart

This shouldve blown up:hubie:

I agree, but Pac and big were much bigger losses/stars and rap still had another 3-4 stars that were in the same age range to still keep it going.

Imo the biggest hit to hip hop has been the drill scene and I love a lot of those artists. But that shyt being the movement of the 2010s was terrible for hip hop. Drill is a genre that ultimately cannibalizes itself. There was no one to replace the Pop Smokes, the LA Capones, the Kay Flocks. That combined with the fact that a lot of artists from the blog era weren't able to reach the upper echelon's of artistry (A$AP Rocky, Joey Badass, etc.)
All the artists who pushed the envelope are either dead or doing long bids. The fact that Kendrick is so celebrated for putting out mid, unoriginal music is highkey indicative of how barren the mainstream hip hop lane is when it comes to talent. The proliferation of social media and short form content was the nail in the coffin, projects don't even matter anymore. Look how many artists were able to become millionaires without even dropping an album (Central Cee, Glorilla, etc.)! Image is king, people don't hear artists on the radio, they see what they look like and their swag, and if they like their style that's enough for them, which is why artists like Carti are able to exist. I still enjoy niche, underground artists from time to time, but I've moved on to R&B for the mainstream.
