Until rappers figure how to sell albums again hip hop (really most music) is finished. There's no reward now. And that shyt about streaming money and show money is bullshyt. An artist should be able to sell 50k to 100k albums independently and live comfortable.

But no one is buying albums. There's not even a model to buy albums!!!

The fix is for artists to stop submitting entire albums to these streaming platforms and force people to buy music again. Give streaming platforms like 1 or 2 songs, but to get the entire album you have to buy it.

Ahh, the phrase that comes up every so often.

So much so I put it in a chorus to one of my tracks from 2007 - almost twenty years ago.

" They said hip hop is dead/ but I don't believe it/ I'm building up skill and plan to reveal it/ looking for those acts/ with/ skilled raps/ the next level hit that's/...taking it back"

I partly wrote that cause it scared me when Nas named his album that.

Why does the phrase come up so much?
Why? Maybe because a new change is up on the horizon.

Turn the radio off and search for some shyt on these streaming sites or wherever you get your music. Hip-Hop isn't dead. Gotta stop relying on media to tell you whose hot. I stopped that shyt in 06. It's so much amazing music out here.

Here's some mixes I put together last yr. Didn't get any buzz but it's cool. They're aren't downloadable. Just upped on Mixcloud.

so much of the "mainstream" has been legit carried by 5 guys the last 15 years

Drake
Kanye
Travis
Kendrick
Cole

out of those 5 Kendrick is the only one "hot" right now thats it kanye is gonzo, travis making washed music, cole we'll see but nothing recently, Drake gotta come back his album was really good but we'll see cuz his #1 slot was taken

that and the gen before it all died

pop smoke
X
juicewrld

guys who coulda been real stars

Drake might be able to restore stuff if he has a huge album but thats a big if. the battle was GREAT for 2024 but wasnt great overall for hip hop imo

2018 was the last year i felt was really great for hip hop 21' was decent

Streaming devalued the music over time. Initially it was awesome to be able to explore everything with the click of a button, but the quality gradually became worse. In a way the lack of quality control poisoned consumption.

Also the behavioral changes in the world and with social media shifted the strategy for getting recognized through music. I imagine a lot of song writing now has some element of trying to have something that can go viral or be remixed for content on TikTok/IG.

We're also getting older, so with more music being release weekly, and the curation of the music primarily being done through algorithms, the experience isn't much different than OG radio.

Meanwhile, Chuck D's Radio Armageddon album just dropped today and not one person is talking about it.
