Why that face breh?

because this is offensive.

plenty of people have elevated emceeing & lyricism before rakim even stepped on the scene.

and busy bee was more of a party-rap/crowd controller type of guy. he wasn't what you would call a serious mc back in his day.

sure. I think Rakim's delivery didn't evolve much from his "Microphone Fiend" days. He's used to rhyming over HARD beats. so his delivery is very stoic.

Compare how Rakim rhymed on Pete Rock beats vs how Nas rocked it. Nas is more fluid. less monotone. a little more emotive than Rakim. Even the way he says "mechanical movement!" on the World is Yours compared to his earlier lines on the same song.

Rakim was still doing that stoic monotone shyt by the time Truth Hurts came out.

and on the flip, nas has sounded stiff for well over a decade now. but I'm not gonna say nas has been surpassed by anybody that debuted in that timeframe, even if they style over his beats.

you can say that illmatic & "paid in full" are equals, but after that rakim still has his 2 follow-ups. nas doesn't even have any other consensus classics.

First Coli thread I ever made was about Rakim. :wow:
It went triple plywood :francis:

Lot of the responses show how much people fukk with the other albums (other than Paid in Full, which is one of the GOAT albums).
Who is your top five from Rakim's era?

I would put, based on catalogue and who I preferred as a emcee stylewise, and would rather hear rap.

1.Cube
2.E-40
3.Too Short
4.Scarface
5.Chuck D
6.Richie Rich
7.The D.O.C
8.LL Cool J
9.Slick Rick
10.Kool G Rap

Eazy E knocking somebody out pending we find out the entire rap game from its beginning been using ghostwriters:lupe:,Rakim could get in there somewhere between 5 and 10 maybe?I'm contemplating if I should have 40 and Rich in there because really I do see them as 90's rappers, but I love some of they 80's and early 90's material though:patrice:? Whos yours?

I've been drinking, so i reserve the right to change this tomorrow :lolbron:
Cube
Rakim
KRS
Scarface
Kane
G Rap
Short

List would be different if we just consider 86-92 input.
Im not including 40 bc I don't consider him or Richie Rich to be from that era. I know I'm technically wrong about that, but they were local/regional during that time.

Wherever nikkas need to be told on
Okay thats not really insight, but thanks anyway, the "rappers who make it" is comedy gold fam....

Wait for it :lupe:

I do get excited if an artist I support is releasing music. Which is why you seem confused, Rakim isnt releasing any new music. The FACT you used Nas as the barometer hints at an irony that I suspect is beyond you.

It is at this moment that you conceded that you either a) don't support Rakim or b) agree with the major premise of this thread--i.e. that nobody* is checking for Rakim even though he continues to make music. Now, let's be clear, you have no more credibility in this thread. I'ma respond in your style just for entertainment purposes and because I'm a nice guy.

You're probably wondering how you messed up. Facial expression like :dwillhuh:
Wait for it:heh:

You disagree with me calling your opinion subjective..............by defining subjectivity. "Subjectivity refers to how someone's judgment is shaped by personal opinions and feelings instead of outside influences"

You tryna kick knowledge?? :camby:

Wait for it :leostare:

this age bracket thing is a fallacy, but you cling to it nonetheless. Paid in Full dropped in '87, who else dropped an album in 87 that you are eagerly anticipating, MC Shan, Too Short? (RIP Heavy D, hold ya head Steady B) the only two hip hop acts that dropped in 87' that still release music are P.E and Krs-One, the FACT you are discussing Ra's greatness is in itself testimony.

Which of these rappers are in the GOAT convo because they might be in the sequel? :mjpls:

Wait for it :ohlawd:

some people say Jay and Nas best work is behind them, some Wu-Tang heads only fukk wth the first generation of clan releases, some people only talk about Doggystyle Snoop, you think Cube is where he's at cos of War and Peace, Laugh Now or Raw footage??

Grown folks usually accept this, you're obviously/obliviously struggling with the concept of change and "things aint what they used to be". Reality is, most artists have to live with this.

I don't think you could come up with one hip hop artist who dropped a debut in 1987/97/07 and isnt spoken of in that way. So to qualify your FACT you have to, at least, use another emcee/group as a barometer, I'll wait........................

I don't know any rappers from 1907. :francis: Also, your sudden lack of credibility diminishes what would otherwise be some decent points. :ehh:

Wait for it :lawd:

and this means what exactly? do things "some people" think have a major bearing on your opinion-forming cos there are way more people who see Ra as god emcee than "old head throwing shade" sounds like some to me, you picking and choosing consensus opinion to suit fam, nice.

Don't speak on Ra. You ain't even a fan. :pacspit:

Wait for it :scusthov:

A lot of people who dropped an album in 87 are still alive, and what? we know "dead rappers get better promotion", but still, and what.

How many of them are in the GOAT convo though??

Just wait for it :why:

he is, news to me, speak on it?

popular to whom, young thug, lil wayne or drake fans? more subjectivity dressed up on some emperors new clothes shyt.......

Certainly not popular to "fake Rakim fans" :scust:

the passive aggression is strong with this one, so he's not popular, he is still alive but he's dope

You authored the book breh :manny:

fam you killing it right now "You throw the ball to first base"

After tagging the man sliding into second :takedat:

or dont get used to it and fast forward to 2026 and wonder why popular rapper from 2016 isn't still as popular

Don't even respond trying to explain your way out of this one doggy. You're done here. :dame:

The 215
Comparing Rakim and Jay age wise is pointless. Rakim was signed and dropped his first album in 1987. 9 years before Jay-Z. They aren't contemporaries.

Yep. It's kinda like comparing Tupac to DMX. Tupac was signed and dropped his first album in 1991. 7 years before DMX. DMX is actually older than Tupac and Biggie. Which is crazy when you think about it.
