This is a really good move for the Angels.
Giolito has been somewhat underrated this season and he's probably the Angels' 2nd best pitcher now.

To be clear: it's not like Gio is a stud. The walks are still a problem. But he can keep you in the game, provided you have a good bullpen.

The move for the Angels now has to be to find another bat if they're going to make a real playoff run.

I wouldn't be against this. But the Angels don't really have anything to send back in return.

Maybe if Cashman can get some young pitcher like Mason Albright (lefty in A-Ball) or Caden Dana (righty in A-Ball).

You'd think the White Sox would have asked for a young pitcher but instead they got a catcher. But it makes sense. Grandal is a shell of himself and there's nobody else on the roster at catcher. Zavala aint the answer.

I don't think making the playoffs necessarily convinces Ohtani to stay and I don't think missing the playoffs is a dealbreaker. There's a lot of moving parts. It's hard to understand what's going through his mind, 100%.

Obviously he had a lot of fun at the World Baseball Classic and he wants to play competitive baseball. But location is going to be a factor to him. Family is going to be a factor. A lot of things will be. It's not just going to be "most money and good team."

I heard Jeff Passan on a podcast talking about how important comfort was for Ohtani. Anaheim has that in their favor. If Ohtani signs somewhere else, that new team needs to replicate the environment he currently has so he can continue to be successful hitting and pitching.

Every team SHOULD accommodate him with whatever he needs but how many truly would?

Who is even available? I was gonna mention Candelario but I see it's already being discussed.

Is Salvador Perez available? The Royals are dogshyt and he has two more guaranteed years left after this one.

Will St. Louis dangle Goldschmidt or Arenado? I don't even know if Anaheim would have enough for Goldy.

No way STL offers Goldy.
Somehow Arenado is performing better than he projected, but he'd be a better candidate to get moved. I just don't think the Angels want to replace one aging 3B with a massive contract for another. So the Jeimer stuff makes sense.

What I think the Angels should do is try to find a replacement for Renfroe if they can't fix Ward.

What outfielders might be available? There's not a lot. And the guys who might be good in theory are all on teams making a playoff push of their own (Max Kepler, Lourdes Gurriel, Teoscar Hernandez...)

At this point maybe the only viable guys are Andrew McCutchen, Harrison Bader and Tommy Pham. Goodness, it feels like Pham is always on the trading block.
