I listen to their morning show daily, but only that, so I can't speak to the station as a whole.

For the morning show, I think that they distanced themselves from the wave of NY drill rap after a few things hit close to home earlier (KastOne was cool w/ Pop Smoke, Ebro was beefing w/ Taxstone before the Troy Ave situation, etc.) Also though the core team just got older and their audience grew with them.

As the media landscape shifted, the morning show covers a wider variety of topics that are typically more useful/interesting to a +30 crowd. I definitely understand the disdain they get from social media clips and arguments, but the show is actually a lot more nuanced and able to discuss race/politics/life in a way that something like The Breakfast Club does not have an ability to do. Even the convo w/ Mister Cee after he got caught w/ a transgender back in the day is an example of real conversations that aren't really seen on other popular outlets.

I wouldn't recommend the show if you want to hear detailed convos about current rap at all, but for everything else, it's my go to.

It's a New York based station with New York rappers becoming secondary to other regions and the South in particular.

Regardless of how one may feel about the regional shìt, the "leader of the pack" mystique was gone and no rival to the Breakfast Club didn't help.

If thats the case how come southern radio stations that do interviews arent bigger.

Breakfast Club would fall off too if they actually focused on music. But they are basically a podcast at a radio station.

So essentially people like Power 105 poscast, more than any podcast Hot97 has.

Better find some new personalities i guess.

Those stations were never as relevant as Hot 97 or Power 105, so the difference isn't as pronounced. They probably are bigger than they used to be but they have not taken that "spot" and will not because radio while not dead is not as important as 15 years ago.

To be fair Hot 97 didnt necessarily operate with the format 105 became known for.

Did they interview rappers? Sure

Was there occasional fukkery? Sure

But it was nowhere near TBC’s zenith in which pretty much succeeded 106&Park/TRL for the go to place for an entertainer to go to promote a project

Angie throwing out soft shoe questions was never meant to have the same effect as Charlamagne

... became the IT platform for Hip Hop interviews it was a wrap for Hot 97.

Prior to TBC Power 105 was second fiddle to Hot 97 in NYC when it came to urban radio stations. That Ray J interview took TBC to the next level and TBC was the number 1 radio urban radio show in the country till this very day :wow:
fell off way before this:flabbynsick:

In my mind Star & Buck was more Stern’s vibe for the urban audience. They became stars in the moment but it wasn’t like an institution as far as promoting like TBC became. It was shock jock shyt with interviews sprinkled in. Star himself said he wasn’t big on having a bunch of guests. That’s a hell of a lot different than a movie studio, book publisher, politician & record label making a visit to the breakfast club mandatory to promote

Well, it’s only apples in oranges because you’re basically comparing two different time frames the reason the breakfast club became a institution is because of the Internet, social media, etc. etc.

Star and buckwild where much and way bigger names within the industry before coming on radio than Charlamagne, Angela and Rnvy before they started TBC
