He is better at making radio records though. Always has been.

True

At this point..Jay can put out ANYTHING..even a gospel album rapping/singing about 88 and it would still outsell Nas' abums..his status, kanye/beyonce affiliation make sure he'll do numbers.

You mean to tell me

Cherry Wine wouldnt blow up if it had Jay's name attached to it? :wtb:

I can't really think of a solo artist that debuted in the 90's (any genre) that's doing these kinds of numbers with their latest release.

I was saying the same thing in the sales thread. Numbers not looking right. The million free copies alone should have hurt the sales.

I think people are underestimating how much the PUBLIC likes the album. And no I'm not saying "Sales = Quality" but I think there is a difference from how the Public feels about the album then the critics. "Yeezus" got critical accliam but I feel the Public was lukewarm on it. Where as "MCHG" got mixed reviews but people are calling this Jay's best album in years. So "MCHG" is probably going end up going 3x Platinum when it's all said and done. Remember he hasn't even official released a single. And we all know he has about 5 songs on here that can be big singles. Also believe it or not the only reason "Blueprint 3" was so big was cause the singles were huge. The album cuts were lukewarm.

Basically. The Samsung thing essentially amounted to a huge marketing campaign for an opportunity to listen to the album early. Some artists will have a stream available a week or more before their album drops on some random website or on iTunes, but people don't really check for shyt like that en masse. Those artists sales are based on their months of promo and hoping people have faith in the singles released. Jay released the album for free to a million people. His status and the marketing campaign guaranteed that people would listen to that free product. A lot of people liked it and went out and bought physical copies. I'm sure of those million Samsung owners, some didn't like it and some were cool with just having the album on their phone. But the release on July 4th became an event. It was trending from the night the commercial aired during the Finals until the 4th. Besides the Samsung stuff, there were tons of "other" types of downloads :mjpls: The album got heard by a crazy amount of people. I think, for artists with a similar status in the game, this could be a model that could work really well. People love free shyt, they appreciate artists that get with the times as far as technology goes, and they love event type shyt. If you deliver music they like and you have that many people paying attention they'll go out and spend their money. You add the whole holiday thing on top of it and it's not surprising. Imagine if Drake cut a deal with Apple and dropped Nothing Was the Same for free on some special app on Labor Day to a million people and then the physical copy three days later. He could probably do a milli first week off physical copies if the album was dope. :wow:

Jay opens himself up to a lot of jokes sometimes, but I hope that nikkas run with that new rules mantra. Everyone doesn't have the status of Jay, but you can make up for it with creativity and using the tons of resources artists have nowadays.

As much I can't stand ROFL_Guy's trolling...

The answer would be Eminem here. And technically Lil Wayne.

Eminem yes, Wayne no. Only knock against Wayne is that every Jay Z album since '99 averages around 400K in week 1. The same can't be said about Wayne.
