There's some validity to this. A lot of luxury isn't really luxury anymore. I think Mercedes and BMW for that matter fell into "Rolex" territory, you have an item that people consider luxury, but kinda lost their allure because it's consistent design. Very little deviation from generation to generation. Tesla, Audi and the Japanese/Koreans make more interesting luxury cars because they have similar performance, slightly lower cost, and have more interesting designs.

So is the mantle being passed to Genesis? I know Lexus is still up there, though they dont have a lot of performance.

I think Buick and Cadillac are underrated too

yeah Mercdes, BMW, and Audi fell off. Not the quality they used to be.

I remember Jaguar and Volvo also fell in the trash alot earlier. Sad what's happened to these luxury brands.


Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti are better investments.

I have a GLE 53 AMG. The AMG trim is still good. I haven't heard any squeaks from my car. Its the best car I have ever owned and I have owned mercedes for the last 20 years. When I drop it into Sport+ its very responsive. I have zero complaints about my car. Next one I am getting is as AMG GT63. From what I see in the mercedes community, you have people who embrace the tech and you have people who want an analog experience. Mercedes tech is top notch, but some people don't want it. As far as luxury, what are people comparing it against? American brands? LoL BMW is solid, but mercedes is still better. Japanese cars? yeah no.

Luxury is supposed to turn heads as well and I guarantee you a Chinese car on the road right now will turn more heads than a similar classed European car, while being built better with more features and better for the environment.

Also, straight up, you can’t buy class and culture.

Proof: influencers/streamers have made it lame and cheapened some of these brands. Celebrity culture isn’t what it used to be. 2014 Rihanna driving a clean Benz simply brought aura. Adin Ross and all them streamers/crypto bros pulling up in Lambos is a fart joke.

I don't think there will be a new titan in luxury, I think there will just be more people spread amongst the existing players if the overall automotive industry doesn't collapse, because there's talk about that... but back in 90's and before, you could just turn your brain off and buy a Mercedes or Beemer and it immediately cosigned your status/lifestyle.

Then the 90s hit and Acura in the early 90s, Lexus in the late 90s, Infiniti in the early 2000s, and Audi in the late 2000s ripped it away from Mercedes/BMW, and then just the overall "used" luxury market opened up windows for everyone and they just really haven't had that dominance since. Damn near anyone can buy a luxury car nowadays just as long as it's not Italian (not Maserati) or British (not Jaguar). I actually like this generation of Beemers, but they have too many models... I have no idea who they are targeting with the sheer amount of models they have.

I listened to the story of the Hyundai/Genesis/Kia brand on a podcast like a year or 2 ago and how they spun off and built up the brands is one of the better car stories in last 25 years. I wouldn't have any shame driving their cars because they have a great story and generally sell and resell for reasonable prices. Cady's are the only American car I could see myself buying.
