No, I’m blaming Mercedes for diluting their brand. The C class was the competition to the 3 series. They didn’t need a trash ass A class to compete with the silly 1 series. The 2 series wasn’t “cheap”, and for Audi the a3 base was still thousands more expensive than the CLA/a class.
Dude the A class has been around since 96. I'm not sure when they came to the US but they have been around a while. Car makers have always wanted to sell more cars. So offering things at different price points make sense from a business perspective. The European market is different than the US market and cars that are overseas are not here especially in utility vehicles. Everyone in Germany has a Mercedes like everyone here has a Ford. They are not diluting their brand just responding to the market. Certain people will pay just to have the star on their car.
So would you be mad if I told you that the whole point of F1 is not racing, but a place for the manufacturers to develop tech to push down to road cars. Teams care more about the constructors than they do about driver championships. Obviously they are not pushing down 1000 hp engines but much of what they are doing with the hybrid tech and battery development and deployment is for their road cars.
The reality is when you get to the higher AMG line you are pushing 120k and above. Most people can't afford that. A GLE 63 will run you 130k for the base model and no one is buying the base model at that price point. It has a 4.0 liter v8. People were mad that the C63 didn't have the v8 but the C used to be the entry level. I believe they are adding the v8 back after next model year.
Certain car people are stuck in the past. Just like F1. People want the big loud engines. But most of the customers want something different.
