Got hit up by a recruiter on Linkedin. I wasn't looking to leave the company I was at, but when I spoke to the recruiter, I was told that the job was home-based. So I immediately went from :ehh: to:mjgrin:

Posted my resume on Career Builder or Monster, and I got a call from a staffing agency, less than 10 minutes later. It took about a month before I was hired as a temp, and 3 months after that Inwas made an employee. That was 10 years ago.

The job before that, I got while I was in high school, after getting recommended by a teacher.

Your best bet is to get to know people who are in high up positions. I regret not taking a job as an insurance underwriter trainee. A family friend who is a lawyer told me to apply and she'd give be me a recommendation, but I was dumb and let it pass. I probably would have been making double of what I made at my last job...

Same with my sister. She got put on to her job by a family friend from church.

So get out there and network by volunteering and joining organizations like charities and big diverse churches. You can definitely meet people who can put you on.

Applied non-stop for several months. At least 10 applications per day, 5 days a week. Applied on Glassdoor, Indeed, Dice, LinkedIn, directly on company websites. My resume went though several iterations over that time period to make it human and machine readable. I applied so much I'm still getting rejections well over a year later.

Recruiter found my CV on LinkedIn or somewhere. Got my an interview at current place. So on and so forth.

Company before that. Saw the job on LinkedIn. Applied. Hiring manager called me. So on and so forth.

Company before that. I had zero experience in the field but an old manager worked there as a consultant. She basically got me the job. That nepotism.

Job before that in house recruiter found my CV online somewhere. Callled. So on and so forth.

Job before that. I was interning somewhere else. The moment I updated my CV with those skills I started getting a large number of interviews.

I had to almost beg to get onto that internship. They didn’t pay for shyt. Not travel. Not nothing. In hindsight I should’ve lied on my CV said I had done work somewhere similar and got a real job 6 months earlier. I didn’t learn much there. Just having the experience on the CV helped.

As you can see. As you build up experience and a network. It becomes much easier.

I got mine off Craigslist believe it or not. Sent a resume and they contacted me to schedule an interview. Maybe just good timing but was fortunate how it came together relatively easy. There are occasionally some good posts in the accounting and finance section. I was looking elsewhere but don't write off CL.

Went to a job fair too, I think even for jobs you not really interested in, talking to the recruiter/reps can give you good interviewing practice.
