But the devil tricked him, Robert didn't become famous until many years after his death
It had more to do with his skill level than fame because he initially sucked.
Dudes like Son House used to make fun of his lack of talent until he came back and became the top bluesman of the Delta.
They couldn't believe how good he got.
The myth became he made a crossroads deal with the Devil.
It didn't help that he used to play with his back to the audience.
He became extremely influential to both Blues and early Rock.

The devil is not a person or thing it's the physical/material world.
So the only way to really sell your soul to the devil is to gain a lust and obsession for the material world.
Think of it as like the anti secret or some shyt.
You become what you think about.
If you believe in god you should walk in his image.
If you believe in material gain and riches walk in that image.
Become what you seek.
How would a person of wealth that sold their soul for riches would act? Dress? Talk? Think?
