How does Drake get credit for "making hit records" when he doesn't write or produce?

This is a stupid comparison because the Oscars are divided into categories. Actors don't win "Best Director" awards.

No, but actors win best acting awards for acting out scripts that they didn't write.

Yes great rappers who make their own stuff is amazing. But sometimes I just want to listen to good music.

Sometimes it's is nice to suspend belief and enjoy music from face value. It may be basic thinking. But something's are better off not picking apart and digging through the behind the scenes.

Some you nikkas listen too hard

Another problem is I feel like people who program and critique urban music are just lazy...

Rock & Roll has so many sub categories like punk, blues, ska, death metal, stadium metal, grunge, soft, acoustic etc..

Folks just throw any young Black artist into the same pot and make them fight each other for the "Ruler of the nikka kingdom" title..

It's why we have award shows where Trey Songz gets nominated in the same category as Lupe Fiasco.. It's why a station with the mantra "Where Hip Hop Lives" can go days without playing any actual hip hop music..

If anything positive comes out of this whole Drake fiasco, I hope it takes him out of the all time conversation with the Jay, Nas, KRS and Cube's..

Just let him live in his own lane as a hybrid... He can have the #1 spot in his own new genre, without having to change the established rules of something that may have partially influenced him..

So you're just a casual fan.. Which is cool..But why do all you casual fans always forget that The Coli is a hip hop message board?

There are people here who actually love and care about the culture deeply.. I'm not gonna front like I'm one of them, but I'm not gonna question or condemn the ones that do..

If you want to be surrounded by the opinions of people who don't care, there's no shortage of options for you on the internet...

It's like going to a Nascar site and saying "Why yall always talking about engine parts and pit crews? I just like to see pretty cars go fast. Yall over thinking sh1t"

I'm only mad that the people that know better but still subscribe to the excuses and try to rationalize irrational logic. It's ok to call a spade a spade. If he's still successful then so be it. But recognize it for what it is. There will be a million more Drakes. He will have his run and then die out when someone else comes along. But in terms of legacy.. don't mention this clown with Nas or Tupac or Rakim or Kane or G Rap or Raekwon or Lupe. He's not on that level. He's an entertainer who happens to rap. It is what it is.

I hear you, just seems to me these types of conversations become a lot more nuanced and honest depending on the artist at hand.. there ain't no shortage of highly regarded emcees with documented writers...including some you just named...R. Tyson (the cat who wrote Trapped ) is the Q. Miller of 2pacalypse Now...the emcee who coined the term "GOAT " has had joints written by southside Jamaica's favorite bankrupt millionaire and on and on...which is whatever, because in 10 years nobody will care bout the drake shyt neither...just something to keep in mind while the sky is supposed to be falling now and the culture is dying and all that good shyt

THIS is what I don't get. :mindblown:

Writers/Producers don't get the credit they deserve... but that's neither hear not there. The fact that Drake gets a pass because he makes hit records contradicts the whole premise of him not writing his own music. SOMEONE ELSE is making the hit records. Drake just mimics someone's hits.

This isn't like R&B because a singers voice can change the whole make up of a song. Rap is different. Lyrics and hook instrumentals. Drake doesn't have the best voice, flow or delivery. In fact he borrows flows depending on what record he jumps on. So how does one get credit for "making hit hit records" :dahell:

Lauren Hill caught back lash because it came out she didn't write/produce her debut record. She was never the same after that. I know I'm beating a dead horse but gotdam the ignorance is so blatant its hard not to go :wtf:

:snoop: she did write her album... it was mainly for production credits. Man you guys generalize too much :snoop: your right though about when you say she was never the same. i know your gonna say its heresay but still yall need to check details and be specific and stop generalizing.

its like the dudes that keep repeating that the weekend wrote "most" of "Take Care" for drake when he was responsible for like 2 or 3 songs.

same with kanye and rhymefest...

10 years from now people will care on The Coli (or whatever version is around in 2025) because that's sorta the point of communities like this.. To discuss the culture in a nuanced below the surface way..

But if your point is the American masses wont care than you're right... 90% of this country still thinks Michael Jackson invented the moon walk...

Somebody probably chose that shyt too :mjpls:
Nelly was on Ebro and said any artist that is a super star and has numerous hits and prolonged success on the charts needs help from writers.. He pretty much admitted that obtaining success in pop music and having staying power is impossible for anyone to do on their own..

You wanna know which artists used the most "help"? Its the ones with the biggest houses with the most awards on the shelf..

It's kinda refreshing that he concedes the concept of being a "genius" is an illusion in pop music.. You're only as good as what you're willing to pay for.. You don't make luck as an artist, you purchase it..
