How is a broken game being rated as one of the best next gen titles?

And another thing.

With the way modern games are changing, review practices should change as well.

A lot of games these days change or improve over time, but reviewers are so concerned with slapping a score on and getting some clicks, that they don't take the time to properly play the games under normal unscripted/unrushed conditions.

How the hell can a review for an online community based game come out before the community is even playing the game?

If a game is getting content after release, shouldn't that be part of the review? Everybody doesn't buy the game at launch, what if I want a game 6 months into its life, then I go read a review that doesn't detail how the game is better/worse than when it was released. I'm being misinformed by the supposed gaming media.

that can go both ways. if some game has a lot of issues at launch, and gets poor reviews because of that, it's kinda stuck with those scores regardless if they ever fix the game. if I consider getting the game a year later, I might be turned off by the poor reviews, even though they don't reflect the current product

when I was reading the GT6 thread on neogaf late lastnight (dangerous, I know), everyone there was beating up on that one Venture Beat reviewer because she admitted to not being a fan of racing games. but so what, she's a gamer and she gave her opinion on the game. a few people brought that up, and of course the response was "b-b-but metacritic is serious business"

IMO I think it's backwards for reviewers to even think about how their scores might affect something like metacritic
Yup precisely. If anything, metacritic is supposed to be representative of this aggregate of dumb/smart, clueless/knowledgable, interested/uninterested in the genre, skilled/noob. If a mom wants to set up a review site for moms and it becomes a hit, it's not her job to now employ people that are already like the gaming populace at large in order to have the scores fit within the pre-existing bell curve of gaming. It's her job to review for moms and metacritic's [dumb ass] job is to take an aggregate of all scores.

I agree this is the way it SHOULD be, but we all know its not that way. Devs make design decisions based soley off metacritic and reviewers make score decisions based off metacritic.
100% agree. This is not the reviewer's fault and looking for reviewers to change their ways will only make the problem worse IMHO. That's why I naturally tend towards devs that make decisions that are independent of things like that or even sales to some extent. Greatest example of that being independent developers.

I agree. Which is why I think the scores should be held or at least reviewers should be willing to go back and update their reviews.

that's why I give props to dudes like Angry Joe that review games after release, and mention if their score is pending something else

I think a lot of it has to do with all the pressure to have these reviews done before release. I imagine the reviewers often assume things will be fixed at release or shortly after, and would like their review to represent the overall game, and not just it's state at launch

there's also a lot of recent talk about if reviews should take things like microtransactions into account. I've also seen some reviews factoring the price of the game

overall I think there's the question of what exact purpose the review serves. it seems at some point all the consumer advocacy might be at odds with an objective judgement of the game itself

to be clear, I'm not claiming to have any ultimate answer(s) to all this
Yeah, I respect Angry Joe's reviews because he really plays the game, and talks about things that you'll never see in a regular review from 1 of these big name companies/sites

Its a testament to how great of a game it is with all those problems. Multiplayer wise no shooter is even in the conversation with the BF4. Just think if it ran seamlessly with no problems. It would be a 9 or 9.5 easily. Only reason it wouldn't get a perfect score is because of the lack of great single player campaign.

2k I somewhat agree with but the game is a bit better after the patch. I'm sure their will be another patch to fix other problems as well.

I also think its stupid, but it happens all the time. I also think the scores are effected by all the death threats they receive in their inboxes

the death threats usually come after the fact, but I agree some people take shyt way too far

Forza was trashed for having less content, even though all content was new and built from the ground up. Other games were praised for Re-selling the same content they sold content they sold last year.

Doesn't make sense to me
:patrice: reviewers mention where 2K fk'd up too, and EVERYBODY talks about the shytty 2kSport Servers. the highlight of 2k14 is gameplay
Forza 5 currently has less cars than Forza 4

If you pay attention to the cell phones sites a lot of them are starting to do a "after the hype" reviews coming back and reviewing phones after they been out for a while. This is a great idea for video games.
