How is it selfish to not want children?

Often see/hear people accused of being selfish when they proclaimed that they dont want children. How could anyone argue for such a statement?

If you don't want kids, it's probably because you want to be able to do things your way without having to worry/take care of someone else and focus on yourself. That would be considered selfish.

A lot of people don't want to admit that because "selfish" has a negative connotation to it, by societal standards but hey, that's what it is definitively. If that's what you you really want you shouldn't be offended by someone not sugar coating it for you and just telling you what it is.

People that say that they don't want kids are stereotyped into 3 categories.......

Those are extremely selfish that they don't want to provide the things necessary to raise children. Time, money and attention.

Those who hate children altogether, so they forgo having them at all.

Those that don't have the means, whether mental or physical, to do so.......

So I guess all three reasons are due to selfishness which is the general label of people that don't want children.

How is it selfish when the 'other people' in question don't even exist? If the kids existed and you didn't want to take care of them, that's selfish (among other things)......but in this case, they don't even exist
