When i was a kid i went to the kickboxing gym with a friend. I didn't know anything, day 3 an older dude saw me loafing off and walked up to me with dark energy in his heart, he slammed gloves in my stomach and made me get in the ring. Peppered me with front kicks and jabs untill i fought back. Beat me ass some but also told me that's the way to work in a gym and keep it up. This was a great man :obama: After that i trained more seriously and the next time i had a real spar was about 2 months later. In between i worked on technique in the ring but never really fought.

My buddy's coach had him sparring after 3 months against dudes a weight class higher :mjlol:

My boy showed up to work clutching his ribs :mjlol:

I know the question is aimed mostly at boxers but banging pads and heavy bags and full-contact sparring are all a big part of Kyokushin training as well- so I’ll chime in.

I didn’t spar until about 3mos of classes, and even then we(the white belts) were restricted to light-contact only. No medium contact sparring and definitely no full contact. It took about 3 more months before we were competent enough to spar full contact with the rest of the dojo without completely dying.

Its widely accepted you have to be a little bit nuts to want to box for "fun" :yeshrug:

It does give me the confidence that in a street fight if it stays purely hands I like my chances against a vast majority of the pop who aint got like 50+lbs on me. most people are getting folded after one body shot dead ass.

Yeah sometimes people just have your number. I can jooks with everyone at my gym stylistically but its this one cat who I may get a good round off ever 4 or so. He take away all the shyt I'm good at plus he hit hard as fukk so I can't even really work the pocket like that :francis:

Them lighter weights mad quick tho, I be catching folks with sneaky ass counters they don't see, and since I'm like tank height you know the overhand is coming after a couple body jabs but I'm too fukking low down their foro you do anything about it but block :troll:

So ended up Sparring brehs. They put me in with someone who has been coming slightly longer than I have, and one more experienced fighter who was working on defence. shyt went way better than I expected, going to the open session again next week

Good shyt :salute:. The thing with sparring is not getting discouraged. There are gonna be many a sessions where you take the fukking beats :damn:. Might also be like wtf? Am I cut out for this? Did I peak? But once your real stamina starts building you will be alright. My only advice is fukk what everyone else in the gym is doing and work 100% hard no matter what your asked to do. Dudes get good and start loafing, especially if they are working with newer people and it gets to their head. Harder you work the faster the gap closes :manny:. Also don't be a dikk, that helps a ton too

Good stuff, my man. Only way to get good at boxing is by boxing. Partner drills and bags can help improve your technique but getting in the ring and applying that is something else. It's so easy to throw a 1-2 on the bag/pads but I remember it taking me ages to be able to get it off against a live opponent

Like @L Ray said, sooner or later someone is going to beat you up a bit but if you don't get deterred (I saw someone recently take a few hard shots, hop out the ring and has never been back) it actually helps you long term. The key is composure and not letting your body's natural instinct to run/flinch take over. Once you get relaxed in the ring you start conserving energy more, you start seeing shots coming but you just have to get over that "oh shyt! They're trying to fukk me up!" feeling

Im about to start sparring this week. Only thing im concerned about is not having enough stamina to go three rounds.

Your not supposed to go 100% on your opponent when sparring right?

Depends on what kind of sparring. Technical or touch sparring should be cool once your footwork and pivoting is good anough to move around comfortably.

Try to spar the most experienced person you can, they will feed you openings to teach you when to attack and at what points of your offense are you the most vulnerable etc.
