it's very important.....it "glues" the entire project together making it sound like one, instead of a bunch of separate tracks on a disc, among other things.

Unless u playing this albums out of a some krk's or AKG headphones yall can't tell the difference between mixes and mastering.

90% of y'all are playing this shyts outta some beats headphones, the standard white apple headphones, or ya stock car speakers. Quit the frontin :wesssttttt:
Sennheisers breh:yeshrug:

I did say 90% Your one of the few. Go to a college campus and see the ratio from sennheisers to dre beats.

You'll be lucky to find one. nikkas on this thread flexin bout mastering when they don't know shyt. Mike Dean has shyt clipping on purpose.

Listen to any recent Cam'ron project, then listen to something off of Dre's 2001 right after in some good headphones or on a good system. It should be immediately clear.

I can tell the difference between a shytty quality and high quality, but I don't understand how the mixing and mastering process contributes to this I meant.

I can hear it, but I don't understand it.

Can u help a newb out

Oh ok. Basically mixing is taking every separate element in a track and adjusting it so it fits within the overall sound and feeling of a track. It's such a deep and complex process that the top mixing guys can be as important as the actual producer and artist to the final sound of the track.

The difference between a mixer and mastering is, the mixer works with the track when its broken down into all its different parts. So a mixer has the vocal, the drum sounds, each instrument, all as separate tracks, and he pulls them together. In mastering, the track is already mixed, so the mastering engineer doesn't work with separate tracks, he just has the final stereo mix. Mastering is more about putting the final touches on the mix, and bringing it up to commercial loudness, balancing the bass, things like that. A good mix clearly makes the mastering easier, but a good mastering engineer can improve even a poor mix, but only to a certain extent.

If you go back and listen to Michael Jackson's material on off the wall or thriller, you can hear some impeccable mixes, and it stands out a bit more because it's all live instruments. Since a lot of music today is built on synthesizers and computer programmed, the mixing style is different, but if you want to hear how a mix can put live instruments played by real musicians in a space and make everything feel so real and like it belongs, them Mike Jackson albums are great for that.

I was listening to MBDTF and noticed that shyt isnt really mastered that well. It kinda sounds muffled at certain volumes and you can hear static in it. Im not sure if its on purpose but i think it takes away from the musical experience esp in that album since its suppose to sound really refined and grandiose
I think the mix is MORE important...

Essentially, mastering is just maximizing the volumes with the least amount of distortion...So, if you have a crappy mix, all you be doing is turning up the crap when you master...

A good mix doesn't need that much "mastering"...People today just love the sound to be LOUD, and that's why a lot time and effort is wasted mastering...It is has more to do with loudness than anything else...

That's not the mastering that's the mixing

mastering is going over the levels of all songs on an album for consistent loudness. you mix each song individually and then master the whole project before release. often when i master i use a reference track i like the production on and try to get every song to that same level with volume and eq.
